Gandolfo family roots

Postby JAleo » 19 Jul 2015, 18:39

I'm looking for records for my grandmother's family (i.e. birth/death, marriage, etc). My grandmothers name is Johana Gandolfo from Trapani, Sicily,Italy. She was married to Joseph Aleo. I believe that she was born around 1898.
I believe that she had a brother Carmelo Gandolfo, and that my grandmothers parents names were Michele Gandolfo and Rosa Ongano

Thank you.

J. Aleo

Since Trapani is both a town and a province, you'll need to determine if they were born in the town of Trapani or in another comune.

The following link is to civil records for the various towns of Trapani province.

Detroit Aleo/Gandolfo marriage record from 1916 shows parents as Michele and Rosa Ongano. See second record from bottom on left. I believe that Ongano is a corruption of another surname since I have not been able to locate any ship manifests under that name.

The name Trapani in the manifest refers to the town or city, not just the province. Note that for the other passengers on this list you see the names of comuni only, e.g., Santa Ninfa, Ribera, Porto Empedocle, Monte San Giuliano, Campobello di Licata. Moreover, for the nearest closest relative in the place whence the alien came, it also says "Trapani" where normally a comune would be given. Finally and most obviously, on the next page where it lists the place of birth there are separate columns for the province and city/town and here it reads Trapani for both columns.
