Best books on reading rivelis, ch. records, going way back?

Postby john_dominic » 26 Aug 2005, 00:19

While i've gotten pretty much every person isolated to their city of origin (before coming to America), I think it's time I start taking it as far back as it goes.

For the experts, what are the best books (or hell, even websites) to guide me on my way (so I don't have to re-invent the wheel), especially in terms of actually being able to read and deciphre the records, going all the way back?

Consider that I know only a course or so worth of Italian and have no idea about most Latin out there.

This is what I have found helpful:

Tafford Cole's book "Italian Genealogical Records" is a wonderful resource with examples/translations of many documents. This is my bible for Italian genealogy.

Lynn Nelson's "Discovering Your Italian Ancestors" is also a good resource with examples of translations.

A good source for words you will find on the Italian records is the LDS guide. ... Italia.ASP
