surname: Bologna

Postby Kamone » 26 Aug 2005, 01:55

I am looking for info on the surname Bologna. I am not too sure where to start. I do know that my great-grandfather was Vincenzo Bologna and he was born in 1903. He lived in the commune of Giovinazzo, in the provincia of bari. But I am not sure if he was born there. What is the next step in finding his parents?

Hello Kamone,
I guess I found his SSDI

VINCENZO BOLOGNA 03 Dec 1903 17 Jul 1997 (V) 11580 (Valley Stream, Nassau, NY) (none specified) 087-28-3970 New York

and his passengers list

http://ellisisland.org/search/shipManif ... 0243120212

he declares to be born in Giovinazzo

write to Comune of Giovinazzo and ask for birth certificate, where you find the names of his parents

Ufficio dello Stato Civile
Piazza Vittorio Emanuele
Cap 70054
Giovinazzo (BA)

Italy

email: urp@comune.giovinazzo.ba.it

I hope it helps, bye ricbru

Dear Kamone,

The Manifest that Ricbru posted was a great clue for you. On that manifest it stated that Vincenzo's father was Domenico who he left back in Italy. Therefore the father was still alive in 1920. Also on this manifest, it stated that Vincenzo was going to go see his brother, Angelo. These are all great clues.

Also, since you have Vincenzo's Death Date, you can send away for his Death Certificate which should list his parents names. It does help when you have both parents' names when writing to Italy.

Now the Family History Center has microfilm for the town of Giovinazzo, however, it's limited 1809-1900. Here are the film numbers.

Here's the link to find the nearest Family History Center. http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library ... et_fhc.asp

Once you get Vincenzo's parents' names, you can do the reserach yourself. You will be able to find other siblings Birth Acts as well as the Marriage Act of his parents.

Also, did Vincenzo marry Veta and have a son named Angelo? If so, here is the 1930 census information.

Name: Vincent Bologna
Age: 27
Estimated birth year: abt 1903
Birthplace: Italy
Relation to head-of-house: Head
Spouse's Name: Veta Bologna
Home in 1930: Queens, Queens, New York
Image source: Year: 1930; Census Place: Queens, Queens, New York; Roll: 1597; Page: 4A; Enumeration District: 338; Image: 924.0.

This should be his marriage information.

Name - Date of Marriage - County - Certificate Number - Soundex o
Bologna Vincenzo - Nov 27 1927 - Manhattan - 33635 - B425

I hope this helps,
Trish

Thank you all so much for all of your help! Trish-I was not even aware that I could read the manifest that Ricbru sent to me! I went back and took a look at it and saw that he was going to see his brother Angelo, but I still couldn't find where you saw his father was Domenico (which I found out is correct). The info you found about his wife and children is also correct. I am trying to understand what to do with the microfilm numbers, and how to find the census information.....If someone could clue me in...I truly am a "newbie!" Thank you so much!

to search for ship records (it's free), www.ellisisland.org or

http://www.castlegarden.org/ (data only)

Here's great info as to how to obtain microfilm to research from (by Trish)

To research census records, you can do this for free at a Family History Center in your area... call them first and see if they have enough computers...

To research census records from home, you may have to $ubscribe to www.ancestry.com ... or even try out their 2 week free trial offer... make sure you read all the details... or phone... they have been very helpful with me...

saluti ricbru :P

If you go to the manifest which has been posted for you. On the first page of the manifest you will see Vincenzo's name and as you scroll along, you will see Column 12 (The name and complete address of the nearest relative or friend in country whence alien came.)

That's where it states where he left his father, Domenico, in Italy. This also means the father was still alive at that point of time.

I hope this helps

Thanks for clearing that up for me! I see it now....I am going to follow the suggestions. Any idea on how much it costs to receive documents from Italy?
