John Battista Levaggi

Postby Zer0UK » 03 Aug 2015, 17:00

Hi, I've recently found a name off a marriage certificate I ordered and its for my 3x great grandad who was called John Battista Levaggi on the certificate and was a Joiner. I've been unable to find any more info on him however. His son was Antonio Levaggi who was born in Italy and moved to Leeds.

Anybody have any ideas?

Where was the marriage record from?
Do you have approx. years of birth for Antonio and John Battista/GiovanBattista?
Can you post it here?

Could this be the marriage registration in Leeds for Antonio in 1876?
Puts his approx DOB about 1850-1858?

Hi Tessa, The marriage record was the marriage of Antonio and Rose Hannah Fontana. They married in Leeds in September 1876. Antonio was born around 1853 in Italy, I can't find any birth records or travel and immigration records for him anywhere however. He was 22 when he married and Rose was 17.

Antonio is pretty much confirmed in my tree and I have him on a few census records with Rose and their children including my great grandad Angelo Levaggi.

The reason I ordered the certificate though was for Antonio's fathers name which i now know to be John Battista Levaggi. Ancestry gives me absolutley nothing when I run a search on him though. The only person I get is a Giovanni (John) Battista Levaggi who emigrated to San Francisco. However he was born in 1840 which makes him around 13 when he would have had Antonio which seems ludicrous so I''ve ruled that Giovanni out as not being the man I'm looking for.

I have also searched extensively for records for Antonio and John Battista/GioBattista Levaggi including births and immigrations, without success. There do not seem to be any census records for Antonio prior to his marriage in 1876... did you find any?

I can tell you that the surname Levaggi is found mostly in Liguria Region, Province of Genoa, with a current concentration in the comunes of Chiavari, Cogorno and Lavagna.
Unfortunately, the online records for these towns are limited.

I have been searching for a possibly death record for a GioBattista/GiovanBattista/GiamBattista Levaggi in the above towns. I think it is unlikely that Antonio's father immigrated to UK.

We'll see what we can find... :-)

Thanks for taking your time to do a search Tessa! I think I've exhausted all options online and will only find out further information by travelling to Italy. But, i don't speak Italian it'd be a challenge. I can't find anything at all on Antonio before he got married. He HAS to be on some immigration documentation somewhere but I can't find anything. Is there a chance it simply doesn't exist?

If John never came to England why did he change his name?
