Laurenzo and naturalization records

Postby claurenzo » 25 Sep 2015, 23:47

Hi all,

I was on this forum years ago researching for the first time for my family history. Now that I have a lot of information, I'm trying to figure out if my great-grandfather was naturalized and if so, before or after my grandfather was born.

I can't figure out how to post an image in here but I found his WW1 draft card on ancestry.com by searching this:

U.S., World War I Draft Registration Cards, 1917-1918 forVincenzo Delorenzo

On the draft card it shows Box 11 (U.S. Citizen - Naturalized) checked AS WELL as Box 13 (Alien - Declared) checked. In every other record I've seen, there is only either or checked....U.S. Citizen box OR Alien box. NEver both. The information first appears that he's a citizen and naturalized but then seems to contradict and say that he's a declared alien? However, I will admit I have no idea what those boxes ultimately mean (especially the declared vs non-declared on the alien portion).

Can anyone help figure this out or find information on whether he was naturalized or not? If he was naturalized, can you help advise when? My grandfather was born in 1925 so if he was naturalized when he joined the military, I think this disqualifies me from citizenship? :( However, my grandmother seems to recall that he may have never been naturalized so I'm hoping that these records are actually conflicting as they appear.

FYI - our name has been spelled Laurenzo, Laurenza, Lorenza, Di Laurenza, Di Laurenzo, Di Lorenzo, De Lorenzo, etc on various forms.

Thank you!

Hi Suanj,

Indeed, the Draft card appears to be my great grandfather. That is the one I also found. His mother was Concetta and the birth date appears to be the same as well. This makes me think that this is also his naturalization petition which means he would have gotten naturalized then correct?

Other information about him: He came from Caivano, Italy. I had found his passenger manifest at one point (different spelling though if I recall) and could find it in my records - just not sure how to attach things in this group. He was married initially and per our family, she passed with one child. He then married Alessandra Faviccio who came over with the one son and they married the next day (I also found the marriage record).

I was hoping NOT to find the naturalization as I want to gain my citizenship and pretty sure this means I'm out on my grandfathers side? As he naturalized and my grandfather was not born until 1925 I think?

Do you know why on his draft card there are two check marks though? One under U.S. Naturalized and another under Alien, Declared?

well I wish post the marriage record otherwise is a bit hard to remember all data:

Vincenzo Laurenza

mentioned in the record of Vincenzo Laurenza and Alessandra Faicchio

Name Vincenzo Laurenza
Event Type Marriage
Event Date 01 Feb 1911
Event Place Manhattan, New York, New York, United States
Gender Male
Age 36
Marital Status Widowed
Race White
Birth Year (Estimated) 1875
Birthplace Caivano, Napoli
Father's Name Ferdinando
Mother's Name Massano Concetta
Spouse's Name Alessandra Faicchio
Spouse's Gender Female
Spouse's Age 25
Spouse's Marital Status Single
Spouse's Race White
Spouse's Birth Year (Estimated) 1886
Spouse's Birthplace Marcianise - Caserta
Spouse's Father's Name Fabrizio
Spouse's Mother's Name Gisuti Maria Gaetana

and now that I have all under my eyes, seeming to me that this Vincenzo Laurenza is no the Vincenzo De Lorenzo of wwI draft registration card, because on WWI draft registration card the nearest relative is Concetta De Lorenzo, I suspect the wife, but he married at Alessandra FAICCHIO in 1911, so the wife must be Alessandra, right?

so the petition of naturalization is abt another person called Vincenzo De Lorenzo born on12 Jan 1874 petition of naturalization on 26 apr 1904-District Court Eastern District of NY (10-125) - arrived in USA on Dec 1894...
THIS person is NOT your ancestor ok?
Also the WWI draft registration card, you mentioned and I found by your data, IT IS NOT OF YOUR ANCESTOR? OK?

YOUR ANCESTOR is Vincenzo LAURENZO or LAURENZA by ship's manifest and by marriage record, ok?

Hmmm didn't catch this. Very confusing since they are both 1894 and Concetta was his mothers name. Massaro was her maiden name and she married so I feel as if he may ahve listed his mother? concetta massano married Sebastien Laurenzo in Italy (from what I think I've found at least). So she could very well be Concetta DeLorenzo his mother?

This one is definitely mine :) I'd found this one in the past as well but Russo Pietrantonio - their families are still part of ours today.
