Hard Italian Surname, cannot find Italian records

Postby JoeBrewmaster » 12 Oct 2015, 07:57

I have been trying for quite some time to trace a surname to Italy. My Great Great Grandfather was John (Giovanni) Mario Ruzzamenti. The earliest record I have for him is the 1900 census. He lists his parents as Alessandro and Louisa Ruzzamenti. I have heard the spelling of their name is very difficult but that they came from a town in Northern Italy called Pescantina. My great grandparents took a trip to Italy in the 70's and found the family name in a church but they passed away before anyone took interest in the family history. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Below is the Naturalization record. I have many documents about the Ruzzamenti family if needed. It is so unique that I can almost definitely say that any Ruzzamenti in the USA is a relative of mine somehow, therefore I believe it most certainly was altered upon their entrance to the US.

Thank you!

Thank you so much for all of the help. I do not know how to link my Ancestry Tree (username: wallsmcdonnell, tree name: WALLS GENEALOGY) so I have included a link to my dropbox folder containing all of my Ruzzamenti (Ruzzenenti) files (there are quite a few). I will attempt to lay out the family as best as possible starting with the oldest known ancestor...

Alessandro Ruzzenenti
spouse: Louisa Ruzzenenti
children: John (Giovanni) Mario Ruzzenenti, Mary (Marietta) Ruzzenenti, Joseph (Guiseppe) Ruzzenenti

John (Giovanni) Mario Ruzzenenti [my great great grandfather]
spouse: Laura Castellani (spelling very difficult, name appears on 1900 census and varies a lot in other documents).

In 1900 the family is in Milford, Massachusetts. John is only about 16 and is with his future wife Laura and their family, they are not married until Feb, 1903. The Castellani family is a dead end for me as far as records, the name is too hard for me to locate any vital records thus far. John and his two siblings stay with the Castellani family and are listed as son-in-law and daughter-in-law which I do not understand yet since John and Laura are not wed until three years later (unless they were married in Italy). John later worked for the early FBI as an informant during the era of Sacco-Vanzetti, he would later move to California out of fear that they would be discovered and harmed.

John and Laura had 14 children on paper but in reality only 10 were theirs, the other 4 belonged to their two oldest daughters out of wedlock and so were taken in as their own.

Their son George Ferdinando Ruzzamenti was my great-grandfather and I knew him until he passed away in 2003. The Ruzzamenti line has been the biggest influence on me culturally, from music and holidays and especially food. I hope to trace our family to Italy and find some records from where the family originated or even find a distant relative. Any help is appreciated and I hope that the information I have provided is helpful.

Hi Joe,
as Marty suggested, I agree that the right italian spelling could be RUZZENENTE.... no doubts abt the surname spelling in Verona province.. In Mantova province the spelling is Ruzzenenti ( ending with "i") mainly... currently are in Pescantina (Verona province) these Ruzzenentes: http://www.paginebianche.it/ricerca?qs= ... a+%28VR%29
so the surnames are RUZZENENTE and ZAMPINI...
for bad luck no Pescantina civil records availables on line...
if you need of Birth certificate by Pescantina commune, you can write here ( it are the email address and certified email address of right office a):
http://www.comune.pescantina.vr.it/it/C ... afici.html
asking abt RUZZENENTE Giovanni born in Pescantina on... ( almost the birthyear) son of Alessandro.
the request must be made in italian Language, please to add your ID card copy, please to say that the certificate is for essential use( like italian citizenship recognition) and not for genealogy, and your full mail address...

best regards,
suanj
