Anastasio Family of Motta Santa Lucia, Calabria

Postby Anastasio2054 » 12 Nov 2015, 14:42

Can anyone help with some information about families on the Italian & U.S. sides? I have a 1910 Ellis Island passenger record I believe could be my grandfather, Alfonso Anastasio of Brooklyn, NY. He was 16 at the time of arrival from Naples on the ship Perugia in 1910. Thanks!

Welcome to the forum :-)

Could this be your grandfather's WWII REgistration Card in 1942 - residing on Utica Ave., Brooklyn? The DOB is correct for an arrival at age 16 in 1910 :-)

Was he a tailor?

According to the manifest you referenced above...

Alfonso (and his siblings, Nicolino and Grazia) and his mother, Maria Giovanna Serianna (who was a widow) were joining his brother, Antonio Anastasio at 327 E. 12th Street, NY. Leaving Maria Giovanna's brother, Fortunato Serianna in Motta S. Lucia...
Here is a POSSIBLE 1915 NY Census for the family at E. 12th St.
Maria Giovanna is listed as "Jennie" (an Americanzation of Giovanna) and she is head of household - no husband listed
Children listed as: Joseph (Antonio? or anothr son?), age 27; Alfonzo, age 22: Nick, age 15; and Maria (Grazia?) age 14.
All three sons are tailors...

Yes!!! He was a tailor and I believe his brother's name was Nick.

Not sure about the WWII but at first glance I'd say the death record is accurate. Also have to retrieve my Ancestry PW...

I will show this to may father. I'll let you know after I do. Even if only a piece of this is correct, I want to express my sincere gratitude to you for sharing this with us.

Thank you!

Looks like he was stationed at Camp Hancock, Georgia in 1918 ...
This date agrees with naturalization date on the 1920 US Census above :-)
On the top right of the image is a physical description which includes "scar on left knee"
NOTE: on the second page (image below) at the bottom you will find his Certificate of Naturalization # -- 1060401
You can request that at NARA (National Archives) - I will post the link at the end of his post.
