John Fontana

Postby DaveDitt » 16 Nov 2015, 22:00

G'day. I have hit a wall. Looking for any information on John Fontana b. 22 Dec 1822 in Genoa, Liguria, Italy and and d. 26 Mar 1890 in Louisville, Kentucky, USA. Was married to Catherine (possibly Katherine) Cella b. 11 Aug 1841 also in Genoa, Liguria, Italy and d. 26 Jan 1928 in Louisville, Kentucky, USA. John was a confectionaire by trade and they had 9 children that I can find. Any assistance/guidance would be most appreciate.

I think I found their travel manifest from Italy.
I don't know if you already have this; however...

https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QKNP-KP6L

It was in 1868 with children:

Giuseppina 9yo
Tito ? 8
Annibale 7
Adelaide 6
Aquilino 5
Maria 3
Giovanni babe

I've also found their censuses for 1900, 1910, 1920; do you have them?

suanj, I really appreciate your effort and information. What is the document/book that you found this information in?

Pippo, thanks for your information as well. I would have never thought that they would have arrived in the US via New Orleans. I was searching the east coast ports for them.

Thanks to you both. Dave

Hi,
the Birth record is been found in the civil records of Santo Stefano d'Aveto- availables on ancestry.it website... the civil records starting from 1866, so, the only possibility for the search's success, it was to find little Giovanni birth records.... because he was a baby when immigrated... and I had luck, as a well my intuition abt the birthplace was right also, because both the surnames are in Santo Stefano d'Aveto, I started the search in this Commune, and I was right..
Happy to help you,
best regards,
suanj
