Is Sisto a short form name?

Postby dinomium » 20 Sep 2005, 01:31

I am wondering if SISTO is short for anything. I have found my Great Grandfather's death record, but no SISTO in the ship's manafests databases
Thanks in advance!
Dino

Sisto is an right first name, no short of anything... Sisto is an version of italian Sesto word...meaning= 6°( 6° son, 6° birth etc.. as Primo first name meaning 1° son bon in the family, so for Secondo first name meaning 2° born, etc, until Quinto=5°, Sesto= 6°, Settimio meaning 7° son, and Ottavio= 8° son etc...) so Sisto and Sesto are same thing.. many popes in Roman Church was with first name: Sisto...! regards, suanj

If Sisto is the given name... there are about 888 Sisto's in the Ellis Island data base... and about 405 recorded surnames... from 1892-1924...

There are other data bases that can be searched besides Ellis Island - using Ancestry.com... If you provide his full name and year of birth, I'm sure someone can look him up for you.

Thank you for the link. Piccirillo could have morphed into Piccirilli (my great grandfather was Sisto Piccirilli).
He was buried in Rockford IL in 1938...

My Great-grandfather's name was Dominic Sisto. He was from Calabria. He came to the U.S. in 1907 and married Victoria Mere/Meher. They lived in Lockport, NY and in Rhode Island. I'm trying to follow him back to Calabria. Any of this sound familiar?

Thanks.

He may have entered the USA at Boston since there is no 1907 entry at NYC for Sisto. However, If you know his town of origin you cantrace the family back to the 1809 thru 1900 with relative ease.

Please read:

then get backto us forany questions you may have.

The surname SISTO is a bonfide Italian surname based upon various popes, saints and martyrs. It is the base surname for all other variants such as sisti, sist but not much more. The name is listed inthe Italian surname dictionary. =Peter=

Dinomium...

I don't know if you have this manifest for Lucia Polletta Piccirilli and her children.

SS. Canopic, arriving Boston, Dec. 11, 1914, sailing from Nap;es
Lucia Piccirilli (Poletta), 39y, from Fireschico (sp?), Italy

Giuseppe, 16
Paluvira (sp?), 15

They leave NO ONE in Italy, going to join husband/father SISTO PICCIRILLI, 729 Decherman (sp?), Rockford, Illinois

Here is another link to the manifest posted by mfjp above. It looks like the last place of residence was "Ferentino"

Also, the name on the 1914 for child could be Palmira...
