Help finding info - Millo Picco

Postby ClassicalFan » 02 Dec 2015, 09:11

Hello All,

I'm working on an article about the opera singer Millo Picco (born 1875 in Torino) - I've found quite a bit of info about him, but have not successfully been able to track down his death date.

His birth name was Giuseppe Camillo Picco - he came to the US in 1905, married Ida Cecconi in 1906, had three children, Mary (1907-?), Antonio (1909-1930), and Letizia (1910-?), and sang all over the country, finishing his career with almost 20 years at the Metropolitan Opera in NYC.

Ida died on October 14, 1940 in NYC, and was apparently buried in Peekskill, NY, though the Catholic church there has no record of her burial. I was hoping that he was with her, but short of traveling to Peekskill and wandering the cemetery looking for a tombstone, that seems to be a dead end. He taught some lessons in NYC and Yonkers in the 1940s, but I'm wondering if he may have gone back to Italy and died there, since I haven't yet found any record of his death in US records.

The birth date that has been published on the internet for him is incorrect (one source claims 1888), and no death date is known - I'd like to correct that! Any help would be appreciated; Picco had a beautiful voice (it can be heard at https://soundcloud.com/recordtransfers/leoncavallo-prologo-pagliacci-millo-picco) and I'd like to be able to give as complete an account of his life as is possible.

Thank you for your help!
Rick M.

Thank you for your help, Suanj!

Do you know of any online source for historical newspaper archives in Italy? It looks like Picco had his debut ca. 1900-1905 at the Teatro Argentina in Rome in "Pagliacci," then performed successfully at La Scala in "Ernani" around the same time. It would be wonderful to find a review of his work from that time period.

I'm still hoping to discover his death date!

Thanks again!
