three di marco brothers italy-canada-US ca. 1887

Postby michelecrescenzo » 03 Dec 2015, 16:43

I am looking for three Di Marco brothers, Giuseppe, Carmine, and Rocco Antonio, who left Italy for Canada but then settled in Hammonton, New Jersey around 1887.

Giuseppe was probably born in 1852, Rocco Antonio in 1857, and I find nothing on Carmine (if that even is his Italian name).

In New Jersey their name was changed to De Marco; Giuseppe's changed to Joe or Joseph.

He lists his immigration year as 1883, and that he is naturalized.
You should also note that his first child listed in the census, Nellie, was born in Italy.
She and her mother (whose maiden name we do not know) immigrated in 1887 according to this record.

He (like Rocco) lists his arrival year as 1883....
His first two children listed on the census were born in Italy. (Tony/Antonio - b. 1880; and Mary/Maria - b. 1881)

Tessa78, thank you so much for your help.

I have a lot of census info on Giuseppe and Rocco after they arrive in New Jersey. What I cannot find is anything about Carmine, the third brother.

And then I find nothing for any of them in Italian birth or marriage records, and nothing about going to Canada from Italy or coming here from Canada. I'm thinking that maybe I don't have access to the right databases--I have searched ancestry.com and familysearch.org.

Thank you again,
Michele

Hello Michele,

While searching I located a Carmine/Carmen in Rhode Island. Have not made any connection to your Giuseppe and Rocco, however.

Have also found this POSSIBLE arrival of Carmine (here listed as Carme. Antonio Di Marco)... the birth date and arrival date fall in the same range as Giuseppe and Rocco

Carme.Antonio Dimarco
United States Italians to America Index
Name Carme.Antonio Dimarco
Event Type Immigration
Event Date 19 Apr 1883

Event Place New York, New York, New York, United States
Gender Male
Age 25
Birthplace Italy
Occupation Laborer
Ship Name Vincenzo Florio
Birth Year (Estimated) 1858
Departure Port Palermo
Literacy Unknown
Destination Place USA
Transit or Travel Compartment Staying in the USA [Transit]; Steerage [Travel]
Affiliate Manifest ID 00058162
Affiliate ARC Identifier 1746097

I have also located several Border Crossings (Canada/Vermont) for a Carmine Di Marco. Perhaps this is the mystery brother? Maybe he traveled back and forth to Italy frequently...
Here is one of the Crossing Cards (1913?)- this Carmine leaves a wife in Cellino Attanazio, Teramo...
The card indicates a deportment - where the reverse side indicates a Surgeons Cert.
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1 ... 9D3-1S6N-R

AND a different(?) Carmine Di Marco crossing from Canada in 1910...
This one is from "Santa Lucia" "Aquila"
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1 ... 9D3-1S6F-B

You do not mention where in Italy they were born. Is that what you are trying to determine? Those early manifests do not give much information; and a specific place of residence is not usually mentioned. It is very important that we know the exact comune/town of birth because that is where civil registrations of births are located.

What is strange (and maybe you have found them) is that I have not been able to find Alien registration cards (WWI) for Giuseppe or Rocco in New Jersey. This would have been about 1917-18, and sometimes this record includes a place of birth.

Perhaps the surname is grossly misspelled, though I have done extensive searches on variations. I will continue to look :-)

You two are amazing! I had no idea about some of these databases; they are part of familysearch.org, but do not appear in my search results. Thanks so much. Mille grazie.

This is wonderful!
I looked at this database and I assume that since it is not indexed, it is not searchable. You didn't go through and read each page, though, did you? Is there another way to search these records?

Once again, suanj and tessa78, many thanks!

Hi,
the indexes are in the last pages each year of civil records, but some year yes and some year no, and no all years of civil records are in perfect order..
and also I found the civil records of Calitri mixed with Calabritto.. so it is necessary a bit of patience and to search, I believe that abt Carmine it is possible find the marriage, if married in Calabritto, and by age it is possible to know the probable birthyear..
Best,
suanj
