Dead end with Grandfathers

Postby Francescafree » 23 Dec 2015, 00:44

Buon Natale! I belong to Ancestry.com and have been rebuilding my family tree from Lipari, Sicily. I have found quite a bit about my grandmothers (Caterina Ziino 1857) and her sister (Giuseppa Ziino 1859). Caterina married Giovanni Iacono (1859) in 1883 had a son Antonio. Giuseppa married Vito Ferrara (1869) in 1894 had a daughter Giuseppa. Antonio and Giuseppa are my maternal grandparents. I found them coming to the US in 1920. I have run into a wall trying to find any information on Giovanni Iacono and Vito Ferrara. Any assistance would be so greatly appreciated. Francesca Flood

There are free online archives that can help you move further back in time. Be prepared to squint a lot at handwritten records and do some Google translation. You may need to establish a login on FamilySearch if Ancestry won't let you at those records directly.

Giovanni Iacono's birth record may be found at:

http://www.antenati.san.beniculturali.i ... 9.jpg.html (birth entry 159)
http://www.antenati.san.beniculturali.i ... 2.jpg.html (index; look for entry 159)

His father is Gaetano Iacono, said to be age 35; his mother Maria ??? (Buicano? can't read the name on either the record or the index, but I'm reasonably sure it starts with a "B" and ends with "ano"), said to be age 42.

Your next step here would be to work backwards through the marriage records from 1859 to find Gaetano Iacono, which would yield a second approximation for his birth year and might give better insight into his wife's name & age.

I did not find a birth record for Vito Ferrara in the FamilySearch records for Lipari (index for 1869), nor a Giuseppa Ferrara (index for 1894), leading to the question as to whether there is an error in either the Ferrara's birth years or native town. Or my eyesight.

Hope this helps!
