Postby deejasmine » 08 Jan 2016, 20:25

Maria (Genovese) Ferrara b1845 Italy arrived in 1897 widowed in 1900 can be found:

1900 Census Pawling NY living with a son and next to another son and grandchild
1910 Census Manhattan NY living next to grandchild and doors down from son

1920 Census Brooklyn NY {exact match for dob and arrival date} can't find any relatives living close.....is this my GG-Grandmother???

I am searching for her death date and have been unsuccessful - now what?

Thanks for the help!

From the NYC death index... Possibility???

Ferrara Mariana --- 96 y --- Apr 14 --- 1942 --- #7890 Kings

Is this the 1900 Census in Pawling?
Residing with son, Vegenza (Vincenzo); and next to son, John?
Based on birthdate in Census of August 1845, she would have been 96 in April 1942 :-)

Can you post the link to the 1920 census? and the 1910?

The Maria Genovese in the 1910 Census indicates an occupation of "janitor"

The Maria Ferrara in the 1920 Census indicates an occupation of "grocer"

It is reasonable to assume these are the same person? Do you know if your GGM was a "grocer"?

EDIT TO ADD

Here is Mary Ferraro, age 79, at 14 Navy St. (same as earlier census) - occupation "grocer", in the New York State Census for 1925 :-)

Mary Ferraro
New York State Census, 1925

Tessa;
As always THANK YOU!!

I spent all day yesterday looking for her in the census and for her DOD (still can't locate that) so I can cross-reference her husband's death and the location of the grave. You have helped me narrow it down by another 15 years - thank you so much!!

Upon the subject of her employment - I thought the "janitor" was odd - the grocer seems more inline with some other family members; her youngest Grandson/my Grandfather even owned his own grocery store in CT he would have been 10 years old when she was a grocer - maybe that's when he was exposed to that line of work.

I keep reminding myself that this process is made up of babysteps - but when you hit those brick walls it's really disheartening!

Thank you again for your expertise!
