Molisani/Molisano 1906/1919 emigrated to NY, USA

Postby Mrstiffanyadkins » 26 Jan 2016, 11:46

Hi I'm trying to find info on a Geremia Molisano. I have one USA census record for him show a 1919 arrival date but I also found a Geremia Molisani arriving at Ellis Island on the Lambardia with a birth or residence listed as Casalbordino in 1906. That's all the info I have. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Welcome to the forum!

Are you trying to determine his exact place of birth?

If you can provide an approximate year of birth, and some information about where he lived in US, we will try to help in the search.
Names of spouse and children would also help! :-)

Is this the US Census in 1930 to which you are referring?

Geremia Molisano
United States Census, 1930
Name Geremia Molisano
Event Type Census
Event Date 1930
Event Place Lockport, Niagara, New York, United States
Gender Male
Age 48
Marital Status Married
Race White
Race (Original) White
Relationship to Head of Household Head
Relationship to Head of Household (Original) Head
Birth Year (Estimated) 1882
Birthplace Italy
Immigration Year 1919
Father's Birthplace Italy
Mother's Birthplace Italy

AND the family?
Geremia Molisano Head M 48 Italy
Lauretta Molisano Wife F 44 Italy
Joseph Molisano Son M 26 Italy
Rose Molisano Daughter F 20 New York
Jane Molisano Daughter F 18 New York
Nicholas Molisano Son M 16 New York
Julius Molisano Son M 15 New York
Lily Molisano Daughter F 13 Kentucky
Violet Molisano Daughter F 9 New York
Carl Molisano Son M 7 New York
Louis Molisano Son M 5 New York
John Molisano Son M 3 New York
Domonic Molisano Son M 2 New York

***EDIT TO ADD***

On the 1920 US Census for the above family, Geremia indicates arrival in 1906; and wife and son arrival in 1908.
He also lists a date of 1919 for Naturalization... Perhaps he (or whoever answered the census takers questions in 1930) were confused by the question. It happened.. :-)

So I believe that he arrived in 1906.
I will search for the arrival of son Joseph/Giuseppe with mother Lauretta

Hi T! Yes that's them. According to the arrival information, they were residing in casalbordino but that's all I know. I've looked at family search and done a basic Google search but can't find anything in Italy. A sweet lady got me his Ellis Island arrival info and he was going to his brother giovanni's when he first arrived in 1905/6. Loreta came around 1908/9 with the two oldest. The 1930 census is unfortunately not very accurate! Loretta's maiden name was Defazio/Difazio. I was told by another group that I'd have to order the info on rolls to get any further but I'm hoping someone can give me a website to search that I haven't tried that might have something.

I posted an addition above :-)

Thank you for the additional information. I will see what I can find!

Here is a POSSIBLE index record of the birth of their daughter, Lilly, in Kentucky.
Notice the misspellings of the surnames

Loretta Facia
mentioned in the record of Lilia Molicani
Name Loretta Facia
Gender Female
Child Lilia Molicani
Other information in the record of Lilia Molicani
from Kentucky, Vital Record Indexes
Name Lilia Molicani
Event Type Birth
Event Date 29 Dec 1916
Event Place Mercer, Kentucky, United States
Mother's Name Loretta Facia

This the image of the manifest you referenced above.
Geremia Molisano (listed on manifest as Molisani, which is probably the correct spelling - that is the spelling found in Casalbordino), is age 24, and arriving NY in 1906. Destination (as you said) to brother Giovanni at 410 North St., Rochester, NY
His last place of residence was Casalbordino.
Click once on image to enlarge and again to magnify - he is on line 4

Here is a trip in 1912 by Giovanni Molisani - there is some interesting information here!
He lists "mother Maria" in Casalbordino from which he came.
He indicates destination as "brother Carlo at 410 North St."
The passengers above him are also from Casalbordino, and the first one lists his destination as "brother-in-law Geremia Molisani at 410 North St., Rochester, NY"
Giovanni is on line 4 - the second page lists the destinations.

I've been wondering about that KY birth. Rather random lol
Yes that's the one she got me. I haven't gotten a chance to look for giovanni but plan to as soon as I can get back to looking around for USA info. Molisani is what hubby had always heard. The o on the end was new to him so I'm thinking I as well. I did find a passport app for a frank Molisani for him to visit his father in Italy but I don't know if frank is related to Geremia. If so, then I have the father's name, which is an exciting prospect!

The records have been interesting when it comes to names. Later on Geremia was often written down as James. In a draft card for james they have the nearest relative written down as what looks like laura which I'm assuming should have been laretta

If you view the manifest (both pages) at the Libertyellisisland site you will see that her two children are listed below her. You would not find them with a search of "Molisani" since they have been listed under her surname, De Fazio. Giuseppe is 5 and Anna is 2. :-)
Across the line you will see that she lists her "sister Loreta De Fazio" as the contact in Casalbordino.
On the second page you will see destination as "husband Geremia Molisani" in Rochester.

Here is Loreta mentioned in the marriage record of her daughter Lilly :-)
