Birth towns for Michele Vinciguerra & Marianna Maurillo

Postby Biff83 » 10 Mar 2016, 04:06

I'm helping an older gentleman who is desperately trying to determine the birth towns of his maternal grandparents--Michele Vinciquerra (about 1870-1951/1952) and Marianna Maurillo?Murrillo (about 1870-1973).
They lived in Schenectady NY and were married in the US (likely NY state around 1898). Marianna had a sister Carmela who married Luigi Nardi who also lived in Schenectady. I'm going to post what I've found so far in US records.

1940 census for Michele and Marianna

Possible 1905 census for Michele

1940 census for Camela Maurillo/Murrillo Nardi
http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse. ... h=13847272

Carmela' Social Security application
Birth Date:
23 Apr 1896
Birth Place:
Italy
Father Name:
Dominick Murrillo
Mother Name:
Antionette Vilotti
Type of Claim:
Original SSN.
Notes:
Aug 1941: Name listed as CARMELLA MURRILLO NARDI

I did locate records for two other Michele's--one in West Virginia and one in Syracuse.
The person I'm helping stated he believed his maternal grandfather was from Northern Italy but most later immigration records I've seen have been for Campania/Abruzzo/Puglia. Also the surnames Vinciguerra and Maurillo both prevalent in Monopoli in Bari while Nardi turns up in Foggia.

The gentleman I'm helping is 87 and legally blind and would really like help to discover his heritage.

Thanks.

Hi Biff, I believe that the right Carmela and Marianna maiden name spelling could be MAURIELLO.. I believe that Marianna and Carmela had also one brother: Vincenzo Mauriello also living in Schenectady.
I found Domenico Mauriello arrival with son Vincenzo:

Hi Biff,

On the 1920 US Census you posted for Michele/Michael and Mary Vinciguerra in Schenectady...
The family lived at Front St., and Michael was a "helper" at "Electric" (General Electric was a HUGE employer in Schenectady, NY)
According to this census, Michele/Michael arrived in 1890 and naturalized in 1900...

Mary is listed as arriving in 1900. Do you know if they were married in USA or in Italy?

Thanks suanj and T.,

I'll follow up on your information and conjecture.

The gentleman believes they married in the states. Their oldest daughter, Rosie was born in the US about 1899/1900 per the 1915 NY census.

Here's a family search link to her marriage info. Appears she may have married a cousin based on the groom's father's name.

Hi Biff,
I found the same marriage record, but something don't match abt the father groom surname.. I believe that is a error, and most probably the surname could be Vincitore or Vincitorio right I don't know why wrote Vinciguerra also for John's father.... However john was born in Sora ( currently in Frosinone province, in the past in Caserta province):

John Vincetori

United States World War I Draft Registration Cards

Name John Vincetori
Event Type Draft Registration
Event Date 1917-1918
Event Place Schenectady City no 4, New York, United States
Gender Male
Nationality Italy
Birth Date 27 May 1895
Birthplace Sora, Prov Caserta, Italy

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/T ... cc=1968530
and maybe I am right because here John Vincitore arrival:

Giovanni Vincitore

New York Passenger Arrival Lists (Ellis Island)

Given Name Giovanni
Surname Vincitore
Last Place of Residence Sora, Italy
Event Date 25 Jul 1913
Age 18y
Nationality So. Italy, Italy
Departure Port Naples
Arrival Port New York
Gender Male
Marital Status S
Ship Name Santa Anna

I no read the ship's manifest, but appear that Sora is the his tbirthplace...

Suanj and Tessa,

A follow up.

Suanj, in checking ship manifests for Vinciguerra's from Limatola, I found the overwhelming majority going to Schenectady or Amsterdam NY. These manifests also showed other folks from Limatola going to that area of NY as well. I do believe that your idea that Michele's birth town is Limatola is correct; and he had either a brother or cousin Vincenzo who also emigrated to Syracuse in 1898 based on info I've located.

The man whom I am helping has even more roots in Benevento since his father and paternal grandparents were from Moiano. I've spoken with him over the phone and mentioned some of the information and I'll be meeting with him in the genealogy room of the main library in the county next Thursday the 31st to show him all we've found.
I deeply appreciate all you folks have done to help trace his roots. Sorry I haven't posted sooner but I decided to go back to work part time as a substitute teacher about a month ago thinking I'd get a call once a week or so and have have been averaging 4 days a weeks for the past couple of weeks.

Un abbraccio,
Biff

Thanks, suanj!

A possibility. In checking Ancestry, I did notice that there was a Michele Vinciguerra born about 1873 who emigrated to West Virginia and another Michele born about 1871 who settled in Syracuse, NY.

I've also been trying to locate Marianna Mauriello's (born about 1870) ship manifest as well as her sister's Carmela's (born 1896) but haven't been successful.

Suanj,

Sorry for the muddying the waters. The Michele we are discussing is the one who lived in Schenectady. However, there's no way to be sure if the 1895 manifest is for him or the other Micheles.

I found this passport application for a James Marello who is actually Vincenzo Mauriello. He returned to Italy in 1902 and married Filomena Marotta in Dugenta, Benevento per a newspaper article I found detailing their 50th wedding anniversary, and returned to the states with her. So, although his last residence was Melizzano on the 1897 manifest, his place of birth was Dugenta based on his passport application. However, the Benevento record you found states place as Melizzano. My inclination is that the Benevento record is correct.

Suanj and/or Tessa,

I located this 1898 manifest for the Patria for Antonia (shows Antonio but gender is female) Vigliotti with daughters Maria (Marianna) age 27 born about 1871, and Carmela, age 7 months, born about 1897, all last residence Dugenta going to join husband/father Domenico (Mauriello) in Jamaica NY. I believe this to be the Mauriello sisters and their mother. Do you agree?
