Question about searching the ancestry.com Card Catalog by name

Postby Nsondy » 20 Mar 2016, 00:55

Last year members of this forum helped me find several members of my family to add to my tree, and I have been trying to do some searching on my own in the card catalog ever since. Marty gave me some instructions last year and I have been able to get to the Italian records, but I am wondering if those records can be searched by surname. So far, I have been able to locate the records that Marty found for me last year, but only because I went to each year and just paged through the records one by one.

Thank you for your help!

I cannot answer that question, but I can tell you from experience - you will find a lot more relatives from the FamilySearch.org sites, especially if you go to the Italian records by province and town then you will ever find on Ancestry.com - see link - https://familysearch.org/search/collect ... Id=1927178
Most have indexes, usually at the end of each year's records - takes a little "hunting" to find the index if multiple years are grouped together. Also helpful is the Italian website of records - http://www.antenati.san.beniculturali.it/?q=gallery
If you are like me and don't speak Italian a few translated words and document format examples, plus handwriting examples will help you get through them. It's not necessary to translate every word - just the key words with the genealogical information. This link from my own website that I have via SmugMug.com may help with that -
https://www.smugmug.com/gallery/n-hvQBn/
Ancestry.com has not made any real efforts to increase their italian records in the last few years, whereas the free websites I gave you have made great progress. you just need to know the town they came from. If you don't immigration and naturaliztion records may help you identify the birthplaces of those who immigrated here, and those often do not change for their ancestors as few people moved to different towns in those days.

Hi Ron I think Nancy is looking for more records of the town of San Chirico Nuovo,Potenza which I helped her with before. Since then there are more records online now like Ron says Nancy "Most years have indexes, usually at the end of each year's records"

Ron and Marty -

Marty is right, I'm still looking - always looking! I went to the familysearch site and started scanning records and actually found some quite by accident, as I still had not figured out what the indexes are. Thank you for steering me toward more sources of information, Ron!

Marty you've helped me so much in the past and now again...I have actually been searching recently for more family members in the Cianci line, and I have not seen the record for Vito's parents before!! Thank you so much for filling in another generation of my family!! I have only seen one set of records with an index so far, so I've been using the surname search on the antenati site more than anything. Thank you both for clearing up what the indexes are :) Now, if only I could read Italian!

Marty, if you could point me to one of the indexes on the antenati site, I would sure appreciate it. I am looking at the years 1832 and 1833 (births) and I don't see pages at the end that represent an index. I must be missing something important here.

Marty!! A million thanks!! Based on the record you shared with me, I went to the index looking for the birth of Michele Arcangelo Cianci in 1832 found him!!!! I'm elated, this is really exhilarating. I can't read the record, so could you take a look at it and tell me what the important information is? I'm trying to figure it out myself, but so far I am not sure what the record says.

I just found his wife, Anna Isabella Iula, in the index for Laurenzana 1832. I've found the record itself and I cannot figure out where it even says her name. Can you look at this and tell me if it is, in fact, Anna Isabella Iula?

Do you read Italian, Marty? Even with my Italian genealogy books I'm having a lot of trouble.

I probably don't have to tell you that I won't sleep AT ALL tonight now that I understand how to use the indexes! I have several Italian lines that I'm researching and this is great help to me. I really appreciate all the help I get on this forum.
