Is Giovanni Puma the same person on these 3 records

Postby rp76226 » 03 Apr 2016, 01:05

The first record is the civil death record of his son, Giuseppe Puma, listing parents as Giovanni Puma and Grazia Miele.

The second record is the 1823 church marriage record (the one by the red vertical line on the 2 page spread) of Giuseppe Puma to Maria Curto. Giuseppe Puma's parents are listed as Giovanni Puma and Grazia Pino instead of Miele (I think) :

The third record is the 1833 church record (the one by the red vertical line) of Giuseppe Puma, widow of Maria Curto, to Giovanna Scibetta.

The first and third records seem to match Giuseppe Puma to Giovanna Scibetta and his previous wife Maria Curto. However, Giuseppe's first marriage to Maria Curto seems to indicate a different mother of the groom. Coincidence and unrelated? Error in my translation and related? In all three cases, the father is Giovanni Puma and in 2 or the three cases, the mother (Giovanni's wife) agrees exactly.

You need to consider who is making the declaration in these acts. In the death record it is the gravedigger. Who gave him the mother's name? A neighbour, the son, the daughter in law? Since he had been married more than once, maybe they really weren't sure. The second wife may not even have known his mother.
The church marriage record Is probably more accurate. But, the priest sometimes wrote the act from memory after the marriage was over. So maybe he didn't remember the mother exactly. Women were often just extensions of the husband.
If there are civil records available for any of these acts you should obtain them. They are usually more accurate.

I found the 1823 civil marriage record that matched the 1823 church record in my "Possibilities" folder. It had copies of the film records of Puma's from 1821 to 1829 so it does not have the 1833 second marriage. The parents of the groom seem to match the church records. Difficult to read, but I think the mother of the groom reads Grazia Munisteri Pino. Grazia Pino was the name on the church record - so they match. See civil records link:

It is hard to reconcile this with the 1833 church record referring back to the first wife (Maria Curto) that matches the 1823 church record names with the 1869 civil death record of Giuseppe Puma, at the appropriate age, with the right wife, Giovanna Scibetta, right father - Giovanni Puma, and right first name (Grazia) of the mother, but different last name (Miele).
