Hi There,

I don't know if you have access to a Family History Center, but they do have microfilm that you can order and rent for about $3.50 a roll depending on your location.

Here is a link for the film numbers for Viggiano
http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library ... =1&last=50

Here is the link to find the nearest Family History Center
http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library ... et_fhc.asp

The microfilm will have copies of the Birth, Marriage, and Death Acts of your ancestors. The microfilm is also in Italian but you will be able to get by doing the research. A good book to get is "A Genealogist's Guide to Dicovering your Italian Ancestors", by Lynn Nelson.

If you can get to a Family History Center, you can always write to the town directly for records. Here is their address.

Comune di viggiano
Ufficio Anagrafe
Mercato 9 (via)
85059 Viggiano PZ

Here is their official website
http://www.comuneviggiano.it/

Here is a link that will help you translate your letter into Italian.

I hope some of this helps,
Trish

Thanks for your reply.
The query was for a friend - he was her grandfather.
I will let her know what your reply was.

Is there anywhere to look up shipping records from Italy to new Zealand ?

Hi Janal,

The National Archives in New Zealand www.archives.govt.nz/holdings/immigration_frame.html

Archives New Zealand Head Office Wellington holds passenger lists for nearly all ships arriving in New Zealand for the period 1883-1973. On arrival in New Zealand, ships handed formal Passenger Lists to a customs officer.

The Social Security Department used these Passenger Lists to check people's eligibility for old age pensions. They are referred to as the Social Security passenger lists.

Another source could be the Library in Christchurch NZ, who also maintain Passenger Lists

Here are a couple of websites that might help.

Regarding the d'Elia family, I have a woman, Anna Rosa d'Elia (or just Elia), who was married to Enrico Savini in Nocciano, Pescara, Abruzzo. Enrico was born in 1834, and all I know is that they had triplets. My Anna Rosa just might be related to your friend's Giuseppe, no?
