Surname: Aceto

Postby DeborahLar » 16 Nov 2005, 10:53

I am looking for information on my great grandfather, Pietro Aceto who immigrated from Cosenza, Calabria around 1888 with his wife Teresa and a son Guisseppe who would have been born around 1881. I think Pietro was born in 1863.

Finding a ship record is tough... I've seen the 1900 census record which says 1888 - year of immigration...

The 1910 census says 1886...

Can you name the rest of the children? Just wondering whether I was looking at the correct census record...

By any chance, do you know Teresa's maiden name?

I have the 1900 census and that info appears to be correct. The Pietro Aceto that is my great grandfather was approximately 24 when he came to the US. I wonder whether the 40 Pietro could have been related not sure. I believe that Pietro came from Cosenza, Calabria.

I do not know Teresas middle name but they were already married when they got here and had one son. They would later have 5 more children in the US including my grandfather Nicholas who was born in 1898. I have sent for info from Social Security for my grandfathers records and I hope that he lists his mothers maiden name on the application.

Thanks to all for your assistance.

Hi There,

I saw the 1900 and the 1910 census for Pietro, Teresa, and family. Per the census records, Pietro was Naturalized by 1910. I would send away for his Naturalization record in CT. Here is a link that could help you in getting the records.
http://www.cslib.org/natural.htm#2

Now while poking around through Ellis Island, I did find a few people with the surname Aceto coming from Castrolibero which is in Cosenza. There were also a few that stated they were from Cosenza. What you would have to do it look up to see what microfilm is at the Family History Center for these towns.

http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library ... umns=*,0,0

I know there is microfilm for the towns, but I'm having trouble accessing Familysearch.org.

I also found a few people with the surname Aceto in Infobel which is telephone directory in the town of Castrolibero.

http://www.infobel.com/italy/wp/search/ ... earch.y=12

I am not saying this is the town of your ancestors, I'm only saying it is a suggestion. You need the Naturalization Records to verify the town.

I hope some of this helps,
Trish

Had Pietro travelled with his wife, she could have been listed as Teresa "Moglie" (wife), with no surname shown - using Ancestry.com to search with.

Giuseppe could have been listed as Giuseppe "Figlio" (son)... no surname shown.

Had Teresa travelled at a later date with just her son, she then would be listed with her maiden who travels with a Giuseppe Figlio.

There is a ship record of a Pietro Aceto... but he travels alone. There was also a manifest of an elderly woman was "in transit", heading to St. Catharines St. to join Pietro Aceto in Montreal, Quebec Canada.

I looked for Teresa or Theresa travelling with a young Giuseppe... but found nothing... coming through Castle Gardens.

Other ports will be checked out.

Ancestry.com transcriptions of the names almost make it impossible to find people.

I also noticed that the script "Aceto" looks like "Auto"... and a couple of manifests were transcribed as "Auto" instead. There are a few "Auto" Ellis Island manifests, so now I am wondering whether this was a true surname.

Many given names for Antonio were also transcribed as "Auto" - for "Anto".

I also checked census records for Giuseppe - Joseph Aceto, one in particular, born 1890...New Haven, who's eldest daughter is a - Teresa... one son shows up a Louis.. so, not them...

But you have confirmed the 2 other census records... so... hopefully the social security info you ordered will have further info..

Hi Deborah,

I was able to locate a manifest of a Teresa Apuzzo, who's birth year is
close to the one we are looking for...

But no sign of a young Giuseppe on the list... so, this may not be the correct manifest... posted it here for you to view... there are other Apuzzo's listed as well.

Name: Teresa Apuzzo
Arrival Date: 31 Mar 1890
Estimated Birth Year: 1861
Age: 29
Gender: Female
Port of Departure: Naples, Italy
Destination: United States of America
Place of Origin: Italy
Ship Name: Belgravia
Port of Arrival: New York
Line: 17

It's great that you now have her maiden name. I'll be checking further.

mfjp

Further edit... this manifest shows 2 children listed below her name as Gennaro age 14 and I??ino? Fannicelli age 12...(female)

Thanks again. This may be the one. I think the family may have gone back and forth a few times over the years. In the 1900 census the first son looks like Guiseppe, on one list it is Ginseppe, someone could have written Gennaro who knows. I thought the first boy was around 12 when he came so that is close. Also her second child was Nicholina, easy to misspell with an Italian accent. My father thinks some of his family came from Napels. Perhaps she travelled under her maiden name?

This is so fun...It is like a great big jigsaw puzzle. I am visiting the library in early December to see if I get find naturalization papers. I will let you know. DLL
