Surname Durazo (Durazzo)

Postby Oiji » 17 Oct 2016, 07:14

Hi everyone,

I have been conducting genealogical research on and off. I recently became interested in tracing my family's roots once again when I came upon your forum. Anyway, I would be beyond grateful if you all would be able to provide some information on my family. Below is what I know from accounts over the years.

Surname:
Durazo (originally Durazzo, or Durazzi. There does not seem to be a consensus just for sure that we are of Italian origin.)

Current location of surname:
USA and Mexico.

Family story
The story of my family has been handed to us
through generations and the consensus is that approximately 6
male siblings were sent to the new world to Mexico, which was giving away land at the time, for political asylum. There we established a town which provided sustenance and economy.

Italian heritage has always been highly regarded and some traditions have been kept, but as time passes the less it seems it matters to people. Nevertheless, we are proud of having originated in Italy, yet we have no idea how to trace an ancestor the old world.

If you would like to know more, please ask away.

Thank you,

Mike

Hello, and welcome to IGF!
Do you have some more accurate info?
For instance, when approximately they went to the new world, and what the town name they established was?

Thank you for the warm welcome PippoM, and of course I'd be happy to.

-They left during the early 1800s (not too sure) and in 1843 established residence in an area that later came to be known as Granados, Sonora.
-I was always told my family is of Albanian origin, individuals whom migrated to Italy in the early 1200's but became very much ingrained in Italy and were apparently well known.
-The family faced trouble at the time and the father didn't want his sons to go through hardship (I am not sure what kind, perhaps conscription etc) so he sent them to Mexico, believing it was the best decision.
-We are from Genova (Genoa?), Italy according to my family.

I would also like to share this video. It includes relatives and it is indicative of our look, if that is of any help.

Here is an interesting thread about Durazzo's from Granados:

You can try to contact some of the posters to know if they got to learn something more in these last 10 years...

It seems there are really a lot of people interested in the Duraz(z)o's.
According to what I could read , it seems we have to go back at least to the 1700's for the presence of the first Durazzo's in Mexico.
Now, I think, as anyone in this Forum, that genealogical research must be based on documents.
So, still we can't give for sure that the Durazzo's came from Italy.
You should find documents in Sonora to prove it.
But there might be someone, out of the tenths of people who searched for their origins, who found such documents.
Even the less, I'd give credit to an Albanian or Jewish origin.
It simply might have spread from the fact that Durazzo is a city in Albania, or that a lot of Jews, in Italy, have town names as surnames. An assumption or hypothesis that might have become truth going from mouth to mouth.
