Palermo Records - Are some missing

Postby rp76226 » 26 Oct 2016, 00:29

I have been sort of surprised that the Italy site on digital civil records which has expanded a lot in the last couple of years still has not released records of the communes of the Province of Palermo. See link -

The Mormons do have digital Palermo records on their website, but nothing before 1862. The Italian website has been better for digital records from 1809 to 1862 which is really what I want to review. Does anyone know if and when the Italy website will be posting Palermo civil records?

The Mormons do have microfilm copies of the records ou wnat. They are just not on line. Order and view. It may be years before the Italian site posts these records.

The good news is that FamilySearch has digitized most (if not all) of the records from Sicily, from the Riveli through the 1820-1860 collections. Access was briefly permitted at Family History Centers, then pulled last June when it was found that the proper contracts permitting access were not in place.

The not-so-good news is that FS is waiting for approval from the rights holders before they can restore access to these records. Once that approval comes, the rights holders will still have a 90 day exclusive access window before FS can turn the images back on. (This news comes from a contact at FS who responded to a case I had opened.)

The bad news is that, on their last audit, FS discovered that many of the Italian films had been stolen. (Of six I recently ordered for Cefalù, only two were available.) Given that FS is moving away from microfilms, it is unlikely that new copies will be requested. So until the rights holders sign off on the new digital images, you may find that many films listed as available are, in fact, unavailable in any form. Be prepared for research delays.
