Question About Finding Records Before 1866

Postby Belsitoj » 26 Nov 2016, 04:22

I am researching the Belsito Side of my family(From Caltanisetta, Italy) and the Battaglia side(From Trabia, Italy).

I have two questions:
Question 1: Angela provided me with the following link to research my ancestors in Caltanisetta (and it is extremely helpful). These records only go back as far as 1866. Is Familysearch the best way to research prior to 1866? Any other options?
http://www.antenati.san.beniculturali.i ... anissetta/

Question 2: Is there an link similar to the above one for Trabia? If not, same question, Is Familysearch the best way to research prior to 1866? Any other options?

I understand that the Family History centers have Microfiche. I am going to check with them as well.

Thank you
Joe

Re: Trabia Records:

Some online records for Trabia covering the years 1862-1910 are on Family Search, as can be seen on this link here : https://familysearch.org/search/image/i ... %3D1947613

After you have clicked on the time frame you are needing, you can either use the arrows on the left, where it says Image, to click on the next image or you can click on gallery (eight dots) below the plus and minus sign, which will display thumbnails of all the images on that particular film. Basically you will be able to see where each new year begins and where the indices are. (Your indices look to be at the back of each year group?) To zoom in, click on the image you would like to look at and either click on the arrows again, to go forward or backwards, or reclick on gallery (eight dots) and you'll be back to the thumbnail images. I hope this makes sense.

The following links you to the records available to rent from Family Search starting at 1820: https://familysearch.org/search/catalog ... %20Library

What you could do is check with your local Family History Centre first, or even better an Associate Library, if there is one there, where they should have modern readers, just in case someone else already has a particular film out that you are needing. I'd exhaust the records you currently have available on line first, that way you'll get use to the script, language, finding your way around the records, etc. Meanwhile the earlier films just might come on line. :)

Hi again Angela.
Thanks again for your advice. As usual, you are so very helpful and I appreciate all you do!!!! I definitely have not tapped all the resources yet that are at my finger tips, just want to see what would be the next steps to go further back, especially for the ancestors from Trabia.

Thanks
Joe

Exhausting the supply of available records online first is an excellent suggestion.

The records for Trabia that Angela pointed out have been digitized, as have been the Riveli 1681-1811 films (three selected years of tax/census records from that time period) for that Comune. Fingers crossed that we'll see a release of these records and other similar records online relatively soon.

For more info on the general situation regarding Italian / Sicilian microfilm records and their digital counterparts, see my post in the Palermo Records - Are some missing thread.
