Per the manifest the MFJP found, it actually lists that Andrea left his father, Filippo, in Bitetto, Italy. (Great find MFJP) This means his father was still alive at the time.
If you care to do the research for the town of Bitetto, the Family History Center has microfilm for the town. It now costs $5.75 for a roll of film. Here is the link for the film numbers.
