good research sites

Postby casassa » 15 Jan 2006, 03:06

I received these websites yesterday and thought I would pass them on. www. stevemorse.org. This site has lots of Castle Garden lists and other info on ships and passengers. The other is www.castlegarden.org.

Hi Casassa, :P

Wish you all the best in 2006!!

Your topic is a great idea... so I too would like to add a couple of sites that I think are good...

It would be nice to see everyone pitch in their favorites...

Australian Archives .... you never know what you might find here... especially evasive ancestors...

http://www.naa.gov.au/ just "search as a guest" if you wish not to register.

also

Comuni- Italiani

Information and statistics on Italian Regions, Provinces and Municipalities. All Cities, Towns and Villages in Italy. Official site, zip codes, population, useful links.

Favourite Site: Well, this one of course!

You can't get better than the help or advice you get here! Just a word of advice though. If you ask a question and are anxiously waiting for a reply, don't read it before you go to work or you may not make it to work!

OH OH. Ellis Island site down....again. Although a great site, it sometimes is my least favourite site (like right now).

My two cents...
My favorite sites for quick family connections would be
http://www.jewishgen.org/databases/EIDB/, same as above - the Steve Morse site
and the two pay-for use sites:
Ancestry.com for WWI Draft Registration Cards. These often give exact birth locations and always the most current address. Sometimes I've even found wives maiden names on these!
NEHGS
www.newenglandancestors.org
Ever since they added Heritage Quest and the Sanborn Map Collection I've used it for an alternative for the census on Ancestry and the old maps are great for finding out what was going on in the old family neighborhoods.

I love to learn about the history of Italy as well as genealogy so I'm always scouting for good books and book sellers. My latest find was the following website:

http://www.artbooks.com/wc.dll?ab~gsear ... s~Calabria

The owner will order books for you from Italy even if he does not carry them. He has done this for me. A great service!
