Crisafulli, any information out there?

Post by RomanG »

My grandfather was born in Sicily in 1896. I've been told that Salvatore Crisafulli is a fairly common name in Palermo.

I have some of the history written down on the family tree as told by him before he passed on, but was interested in meeting other Crisafulli's from the Palermo, Sicily area.

I'm planning a trip to Sicily in 5 years (Just started brushing up on my Sicilian) and I'd like to possibly meet some distant relatives.

Thanks for the great site.

Hi Roman,

This is a link for Infobel which is a telephone directory.
http://www.infobel.com/italy/wp/search/default.asp

You type in the name and if you know the town, and you will get names and addresses of people in that town with your surname.

Also, if you give us some extra information as where did Salvatore settle? Do you have his ship's manifest? What type of documents do you have?

The more information you give us, the better we can help you. An example is I found this Salvatore in the WWI Draft Cards

Name: Salvatore Crisafulli
City: Johnstown
County: Cambria
State: Pennsylvania
Birthplace: Italy
Birth Date: 07 Oct 1895
Race: Caucasian
Roll: 1893243
DraftBoard: 1

This WWI Draft Card states Salvatore, came from Messina, Sicily. It did mention a town, but I can't make it out. It looks like Ficcara or Furnari. But like I said, I need another set of eyes to see the name of town.

If you give us more information, maybe we can help you find out more information on your ancestors.

Have a good one.

Hi Roman,

The WWI Draft Card was only an example since I did not have information from you to look things up. However, I do know that the Family History Center has microfilm for the town of Furnari that you can order and rent for about $5.75 a roll. Here is the link for the film numbers.

Here is the link to find the nearest Family History Center.

Hi Roman,

Ok, let's start from the beginning for now I have totally new information for you.

Per the manifest for Salvatore Crisafulli, he was born in Castroreale. If you look at Page 2 of the manifest at the very last column, you will see where it states he was born in Castroreale. His last residence was Mazzarra.

Per Page 1 of the manifest, Salvatore left his father, Santi, in Italy.

Page 1

Page 2

There is microfilm for the town of Castroeale. Here is the link for the film numbers.

Here is the official website.

Now I hope this helps.

Hi again

It gets better. This "could be" Salvatore's father, Santi (Santo) coming into Ellis Island, going to see his brother, Vincenzo.

First Name: Santo
Last Name: Crisofulli
Ethnicity: Italy, Italian South
Last Place of Residence: Castroreale, Italy
Date of Arrival: May 08, 1905
Age at Arrival: 41y Gender: M Marital Status: M
Ship of Travel: Italia
Port of Departure: Messina
Manifest Line Number: 0016

Here is the manifest.
http://ellisisland.org/search/shipManif ... 2396010345

This message was updated.
I'm having problems with Ellis Island, but I think this is the manifest for Cosimo. It states he left his parents in Mazzarra and on Page 2 states he was born in Castroreale.

Crisofrelli,Coseno Massana, Italy 1912 21 1891

Page 2

Still poking,

Syracuse was the town my grandfather met my grandmother. My grandmothers family still lives there to a certain degree.

I never understood why the Ellis Island ships log list Columbus Ohio as Cosimo's address. I've never heard from anyone he lived there.

You're the research master... :D

Roman,
after all this help of our friends in this forum, I suggest you to request the naturalization records (if any), there you find the right date and place of birth.
You can also request and see on marriage application and act, death act and cemetery record.
bye Riccardo

Hi Roman,

I just wanted to post the ship's manifest for Concetta for there is information on here too for you to research.

Page 1

Page 2

On the manifest, Concetta is traveling with her mother, Carmela Furnacri (b. 1885), her sister, Nicolina (b. 1909), and her brother, Carmelo (b. 1911). They left "mother" Concetta in Italy. They were going to go see husband/father, Giuseppe Truglio. Now you even have the names of the parents of Concetta Truglio who married Crisafulli.

Also, on this manifest, if you look at the name above Carmela Furnacri, there is a Nicola Truglio, who left his father, Carmelo, in Italy, and is also going to see his brother, Giuseppe Truglio.

If you look at the naming pattern of the Giuseppe Truglio and Carmela Furnacri, the first born male child is Carmelo after Giuseppe's father, and the first born female child is Concetta after Carmela's mother. All great clues.

Here is the ship's manifest for Giuseppe Truglio. The manifest actually states he left his wife, Carmela Furnarci.

Page 2

Here is more information for you.
