DiFresco & Terrazzio

Postby adifresco » 10 Mar 2006, 12:17

My last name is DiFresco and I'm having a hard time tracing my Italian roots. I'm only a quarter Italian... I know that my paternal great-grandparents immigrated from Italy to New York sometime before my grandfather (also named John) was born, which was 1929. Their names were John and Sabina DiFresco. (Maiden name: Sabina Terrazzio.) I know nothing of any ancestors previous to them... all I know is that John died in the 1940's and Sabina died in 1981, both in New York. I don't even know what part of Italy they came from. Any information at all about either of these surnames would be helpful and greatly appreciated.

Ricbru........posted at the same time.........

Having a difficult time finding info.........can you provide any other details?
Have you pulled records, birth, marriage and death starting with yourself and working backwards? Obituaries and cemetary records are also good sources of info, can provide additional clues.........and do not overlook church records.

Giovanni Di Fresco leaves from Palermo on Ship "S.S. Ancona" on Nov. 9th 1913, age 18, (born about 1885/1886) leaves at home her mother Tumminia Antonia in Villagrazia, Palermo, going to Youngstown, to reach his uncle Speziale Giuseppe

Thanks a lot... all of your info has been helpful. Having the exact birth and death dates helps greatly, although I'm still looking for one. These two are in fact my great-grandparents:

Name: Sabina Difresco
SSN: 070-36-0909
Last Residence: 10040 New York, New York, New York, United States of America
Born: 11 Jun 1905
Died: May 1981
State (Year) SSN issued: New York (1961-1962

Difresco John 52 y Oct 12 1948 10158 Bronx D162

Ricbru, your information was particularly helpful...
Giovanni is the Italian form of the name John, right? (I'm new at this.)
Is there anyway to confirm for sure that John and Giovanni are in fact the same person? Their birth years seem to line up, so I'm going to go ahead and assume that they are one in the same. Also, I was under the impression that John and Sabina were married in Italy and then immigrated to New York together, but the passenger list indicates that this was not the case.... John/Giovanni immigrated with his older brother, Giuseppe, which I didn't know, and wasn't married at the time.

So my next question is this: When did my great-grandmother, Sabina Terrazzio, come to America? I know for a fact that she was born in Italy, but I can't find any record of her on the Ellis Island passenger list, even using alternate spellings. Any suggestions?

Also, I now know that Giovanni and Giuseppe's mother's name was Tumminia Antonia, from Villagrazia, Palermo. How can I find more information on her and eventually trace back farther? Like I said, genealogy is new to me (especially Italian genealogy).

One last thing... I found another DiFresco family living in New York around the same time as my family, whose descendents have spread around the country. I managed to figure out that they immigrated from Villabate, another small town near Palermo. I figure they're related somehow, although not directly. I suppose the only way to find out how they're related would be to start tracing their family tree also and trying to find a common ancestor, correct?

Thanks again for all the help!

Re: Sabina wife of John DiFresco
If maiden name is PERAZZO, here are two possible census, vj

1910 US Census
18th Ward, Brooklyn, Kings, NY
82 Debevoise Ave

Frank PERAZZO, 63 yrs old (b abt 1847), married for 40 years (m abt 1870)
immig 1920 Na (naturalized), rents
- wife Tessie, 67 yrs old (b abt 1843), 3 children born, 2 children living
immig 1896
- daughter-in-law Jennie, 40 yrs old (b abt 1870), Widow, 3 children born, 3 children living,
immig 1907, Baker - Factory
- grandson Frank, 10 yrs old (b abt 1900), immig 1907
- grandaughter Tessie, 8 yrs old (b abt 1902), immig 1907
- grandaughter Sabina, 6 yrs old (b abt 1904), immig 1907

note another Perazzo family lives next door: Nacomede Perazzo 27 yrs old & family

1920 US Census
Brooklyn District 13, Kings, NY
82 Debevoise Place

Frank PERAZZO, 73 yrs old, Widower, immig 1903, Na 1910, rents
- grandson Frank, 20 yrs old, immig 1906, Pa (filed 1st papers)
- grandaughter Theresa, 18 yrs old, immig 1906 Al (alien)
- grandaughter Sadie, 16 yrs old, immig 1906 Al

If Perazzo is correct, it might look like this:
Descendants of Francesco Perazzo
1 Francesco Perazzo 1847 -
...+Tessie Unknown 1843 - before 1920
......2 Unknown Perazzo ? - before 1910
.........+Giovanna Bianco 1870 - before 1920
............3 Sabina Perazzo 1905 -
...............+John DiFresco 1896 -
..................4 John DiFresco 1929 -

what do you think, is it possible? vj
