SanPaolo from Sicily

Postby Franco56789 » 18 Mar 2006, 05:18

Anna Sanpaolo was born in Carini, Sicily to Giuseppino and Maria (maiden name was ?Eucaristica?) Sanpaolo along with 5-6 siblings. Giuseppino died in WWI and shortly thereafter Maria died and all children were orphaned.

Anna married Franco prestia of Sciacca, had 3 children (Vito, Joe, Ignazio) and immigrated to America in the 1960s.

According to Anna, Sanpaolo was a fictional name that was made up and they originally came from the Island of Favignana (Aegusa), the larget of the The Aegadian Islands (Italian: Isole Egadi). Supposedly, the Duke of the Island was named Vitale (Duca Vitale) and he had an illegitamte child with one of his governess, and since the child was born on St. Paul's day, the governess gave the surname SanPaolo.

She also mentioned that there is a Santo Cusimano/Cusumano somewhere in there.

I suggest you to contact, for civil record

Comune
Ufficio di Stato Civile
Carini (PA)

Comune
Ufficio di Stato Civile
Favignana (TP)

Since I'm native of Trapani, I know where is San Cusumano, it is a neighbor belonging to comune of Erice (always province of Trapani)

What information (as far as dates) do you have for Anna. I have the records for Carini to the middle of 1905 on my site.

Let me know if I can help.
