18th C Genovese records

Postby RichardNewbold » 09 Apr 2006, 04:04

Hi,
Pleased to have joined this site. I was about to write to the Comune di Genova (As suggested on daddezio.com) about an ancestor born in Genova, when the thought occurred to me that I'm shooting blind a little, so I've been looking for a decent forum to try and get some hints on Italian research first and this seems to be the best one.

My questions are as follows - my ancestor was born in 1780 in Genova, is the Comune the correct place to be looking? If yes, then should I send money with any request for information, and if so how much?

I have his date of birth and parents names, what information am I likely to discover with that information?

On the offchance that anyone has related research, I am looking to trace Augustin Ferber b 26/02/1780 in Genova, son of Thomas Ferber and Catherine Castelle. Augustin and Thomas were both Mariners and I believe that Thomas was also born in Genova, though Ferber doesnt sound very Italian to me (Not that I know very much about Italian names).

Many thanks for any help

In Genova state Archive are the civil records :
A t t i d e l l o s t a t o c i v i l e d e l d i p a r t i m e n t o d i
G e n o v a ,
voIl. 788 (1806-1813)
In Genova Municipality are the civil records from 1866 to 1925 as also in LDS microfilm...
for before this date (1780) I think that you must search the baptism act of your ancestors, if they have in Genova archive church... it is a far possibility, but however, you can write in Bishop archive:
Archivio Storico Diocesano
Via T. Reggio, 12
16123 Genova (GE)
Italy

hoping helpful.. regards, suanj

Thankyou very much for that, I shall write as advised. Should I include a money order of some kind as a donation or is that not needed?

I will post my letter here once I have composed it if that is ok, to see that my Italian is translated well.

Richard

Hi, I think that is better no include a money for this first letter, because is better that you wait the reply, if they have the records or no, and if they have, after the reply and if they can find it for you, well in this case you decide if to send a donation. Regards, suanj
