There are three basic steps to Italian Genealogy.....
1. Research and gather all US documents
2. Determine town of origin and check Lds for microfilmed records of civil/parish records
3. Write to the town of origin for extracts of documents

As far as online records, you will not find an online database listing birth, death and marriage records....there are a few sites with limited infos,
but it is not like the state databases we have here in the US.

Hi lisa_i_gosling,

Have you tried posting on the message boards at www.rootsweb.com for connecting with others seaching those surnames?

It sounds like you have a lot of dates but what documents do you already have to back them up? I found that my subscription to ancestry.com, the data base at www.ellisisland.org and this forum helped me with my reseach. From here I was able to locate distant relatives who helped with piecing together my family tree. I now have several documents.

Of course, the best thing to do would be to do as wldspirit suggests and determine the town of origin and check LDS microfilmed records. It's the most accurate.

Hi lisa_i_gosling,

Lets see if we can find them on census records and ship manifests.

Who were the immigrants and where did they settle in the US?? Do you know approx year of arrival. Who was born in Italy? USA?

Ancestry.co databases are primarily US, UK with some Canada records.
As stated above, you will be getting your Italian records either from LDS films or by writing the comune. Hopefully the first, but the 1st step is to get all USA records available and trace backwards.

Waiting for reply.

Hi Jcsm,
well my Italian ancestors never lived in the US, they were all born in Italy and some of them moved to Wales in 1951-1953. Other than that the others stayed in Italy. My grandfathers family were from Vitorchiano, Viterbo, Lazio, Italy. My grandfather lived at number 11 vicolo dell arco and my grandmothers family were from Cassino, Frosinone, Lazio, Italy.
How do I find my ancesters LDS films?

thanks alot for all your help, please get back to me Lisa x

Hi Lisa,
Here are some links for you.

LDS films for Cassino, Frosinone, Italy, 1809-1900:

http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library ... o+civile++

Link to find your nearest Family History Center:

http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library ... et_fhc.asp

Link to some pictures of Vitorchiano

http://www.romeartlover.it/Vitorchiano.html

I didn't find LDS films for Vitorchiano, so here is the address to write to:

Ufficio dello Stato Civile
Comune of Vitorchiano
01030 VITORCHIANO (VT)
ITALY or ITALIA

Write your request in Italian (can have translation done here by one of our Italian members), send a self addressed return envelope, a copy of your photo ID (recommended), and an international reply coupon (can be obtain @ your local post office).

Remember to always work backwards & get all available local vital records.

Hope this helps.

Good luck in your research.

jcsm :)
