How to find family members

Postby haley » 08 May 2006, 05:18

With the help of a few here, I have found out information on my grandfather and his brothers who came from Italy to Ellis Island. How do I verify for sure they are related, along with if they had families once the settled down. Thanks.

Census info for USA will list family members, and by sending to the town of origin in Italy for a "stato di famiglia originario"....(original state of the family)
this documents all family members past and present, including those who moved away or died.

Ricbru or Suanj would be able to provide you with the address of where to write to request this certificate. this link will provide you with a standard form letter....

When requesting records from Italy, does the letter have to be written in Italian, or can I use English?

It should be written in Italian.

haley,

Don't forget to send with your request, a self addressed return envelope, a copy of your photo ID (recommended) and an international reply coupon (maybe obtain from your local post office). The IRC pays for the return postage, so if you are requesting a bunch of records, you will want to send several.

Hope this helps.

When addresses are provided by others, they always include very clear cut instructions as to how request are made.
