Sanna family from Sciacca, Sicily

Postby JessicaLyn » 26 Jan 2003, 18:46

My great great grandfather Filippo Leone Sanna (aka Papa Leone) was born Sep 1854 in Sciacca, Sicily. His wife was Giovannina Barbera (aka Mama Nina) who was born abt 1863 or 1864. They married abt 1881-82 in Sciacca. Papa Leone died in the mid to late 1940\'s and Giovannina died in the mid to late 1930\'s.

Their children were:

Antonio Raphaelo (Anthony) b. 21 May 1883 in Sciacca. Later married Anna Romano. Anthony died 27 Aug 1962. Anthony and Anna\'s children were Leon, Bartel, Charles, Jeanette, and Anthony \"AQ\".

Giuseppa (Josephine) b. 29 Feb 1887 in Sciacca (my great grandmother). Later married Thomas Mangiere of NYC. Josephine died 8 Dec 1976 in Michigan. Josephine and Thomas\' children were May and Jeanine.

Carlo/Calogero (Charlie) b. 14 Jun 1889 in Sciacca. Later married Emilia Cilillo. Charlie died 3 Apr 1970 in Richmond, Staten Island, NY.

Alfredo (Alfred) b. 1893 or 1894 in Sciacca. Later married Julia Lease. Alfred died in California abt 1957. Alfred and Julia\'s children were F. Leone \"Lee\", Alfred, and Jeanne.

Tamaguo b. abt 1899 in Sciacca. Later died of mastoids as a child sometime before 1910.

Pasqualino (Douglas) b. 22 July 1902 in NYC. Later married Andree\' Cabella abt 1925. Doug died 16 Dec 1982. Doug and Andre\'s son was F. Leone \"Robert\" Sanna.

Yolla (Yolanda) b. 10 Oct 1905 in NYC. She never married and died 14 Jun 1996 in Wisconsin.

The Sanna brothers here were heavily into the cheese and dairy industry. In 1935 Anthony Sanna and his sons Bartel and Leon formed \"Sanna Dairies\". After the war Bartel\'s two brothers and a brother in law joined Sanna Dairies. After the WWII they introduced \"Sanalac\", the first instant dry milk on the market. Many more consumer products followed, including the first instant Hot Cocoa Mix, Swiss Miss. In 1968, the Sanna brothers decided to sell their business to Beatrice Foods. In 1973 they formed SACO foods in Wisconsin, which is still going strong today.

We believe F. Leone \"Papa Leone\" had a brother named Gaspare. I have been talking to someone with a father named \"Antonio Sanna\" and this Antonio was cousin to my relative Antonio Raphaelo Sanna. Apparently Antonio\'s father \"Gaspare\" and Antonio Raphaelo\'s father \"Filippo Leone\" were brothers.

Any help would be appreciated! :-D
