please help finding the birth place of my grandfather

Postby maddief » 05 Jul 2006, 09:47

I am currently trying to apply for dual citizenship through my paternal grandfather but am having trouble tracking down his birth certificate. My grandfather, Franco Franconi, never even saw his birth certificate. We always celebrated his birthday as the 15th of July, 1909 though that is a guestimate. We believe he was born in the woods of Calabria somewhere near Stilo and Ferdinandea. His parents were Ferdinando and Maria (Sabettini) and he had a little brother named Aldo. I would be eternally greatful to anyone who might help me find the exact town I would need to write to for a copy of his birth certificate. Below I am listing additional information that might be helpful. Thank you!

Family name: Franconi
Given Name: Franco
Other names used, if any: Frank
Name at time of entry into the U.S.: Franco Franconi
Country of Birth: Italy
Date of Birth: exact date unknown though celebrated as 07/15/1909
Place of Residence: Franco was born in the province of Calabria in Italy but the family is from Piteccio in the province of Pistoia
Place of Departure: Genova, Italy
Port-of-Entry into the U.S.: Ellis Island, New York
Date of Entry: 07/03/1911*
Manner of Entry: Sea
Mode of Travel (carrier): Duca D'Aosta
Traveled with: brother, Aldo Franconi (8 months old)
mother, Maria Sabettini (22 years old)**

* My grandfather returned to Italy at the age of 13 where he stayed for three years until rejoining the family in Pennsylvania.
** My grandfather, his brother and mother were joining my great-grandfather, Ferdinando Franconi, who arrived in 1910 and who was living in the Wyoming, PA area.

What I like about these cards is they indicate height, weight, etc... best of all, his own signature.

Thank you all for all of your help thus far!!! I can't tell you how much this speeds up the process. I have one concern as to Reggio Calabria being the place of birth of my grandfather: It appears to be both a city as well as a province. My aunt has told me that she has always thought he was born somewhere in the area of Stilo and Ferdinandea (both in the province of Reggio Calabria but on the other side of the boot from the city of Reggio). To apply for the birth certificate I need to send my request to the specific "comune", right? Any advice? (Thanks again.)

From Stilo to Ferdinandea

Hope this map helps some... towns are almost 11 miles apart.

Will keep looking...

Maria,

The last name seems actually to be Sabattini. I just returned yesterday from a week in Porretta Terme researching my family tree (I suspect we're cousins, then, if Sabattini is in your family tree, but I wouldn't know how yet). There were a lot of Sabattinis in the parish records.

Do you know any other family names in the Porretta part of your tree?

Mark
