Cassini and Naples?

Postby johnl » 17 Jul 2006, 14:38

A relation of mine, Joseph Cassini, was married at a secret Catholic ceremony at the Chapel of the Embassy of the Kingdom of Sardinia, London, in 1802. He died in London in 1816 and, although I can find no trace of his wife, I have traced the family forward to the present day.

However, I can find no trace of where he came from. My grandmother told me that he brought the present of an embroidered waistcoat from the King of Naples to the King of England in 1799. I have looked for evidence in the usual places in England - the Public Records Office, the Family Records Centre, British Library, Windsor Castle archives and so on. I have also visited Perinaldo to look for a Joseph in the Church records. I did find a Joseph, but born six years earlier than he should have been to be my ancestor. Even if he had been, I would have been unable to find the Naples link.

I have also been in touch with the State Archives in Naples and elsewhere as well as with an Italian historian with extensive knowledge of Naples.

Would anybody be able to suggest what I should do next? I seem to have run out of possibilities.

when you say Perinaldo, you mean that your ancestor was a descendant of Cassini family of Perinaldo?

Suanj,

Yes, that's my ancestor. I've actually seen the original record as the chapel is now the Church of St Anselm in Lincoln's Inn Field in London.

What I find hard to understand is that, bearing in mind that there's the French Revolution going on, the English are attempting to keep the ports sealed, and that Joseph was a Catholic and took the trouble to be married in a Catholic ceremony - illegal at the time - how did he manage to arrive, get married, live in north London, have children christened into the Protestant traditions, and not have problems with the authorities?

I've no idea what he did for a living. He was apparently fifty when he married in 1802 as he was recorded as being 64 on his death in 1816. His family made a good living in the pianoforte trade.

Nobody here can suggest how this might have been accomplished though, as my grandmother believed, if he was a messenger from the King of Naples (remember that Nelson rescued the Royal Family about this time) that might have allowed him to settle in London.

As I said, I've been to Perinaldo where the Cassini astronomer family come from (see my website: http://catnaps.org/cassini/family.html) to see if there was a possibility that he came from there, but what I discovered is ambiguous. Now I believe I've tried all reasonable sources in Britain and think it might be too complicated to research in Italy.

All ideas will be gratefully received...

Regards
JL

Suanj,

Sorry, I missed the two other questions. Joseph and Susannah's children were:
Joseph Lewis b.1808 - I think he died young
Ann Angela b.1808 - I think she died young
Henry Thomas b.1810 d.1877
John b.1815 d.1816

My grandmother also believed we were related to the Cassini astronomer family, which is the reason I went to Perinaldo where Giovanni Domenico Cassini was born - he became Jean Dominique Cassini, or Cassini I of the five generations of astronomer/geoegraphers.

I should also add that my great grandfather was named John Dominicus Cassini as was his father, which indicates to me that they thought they were related to Giovanni Domenico Cassini. The bad news is that I've thoroughly researched the astronomer family and know that the line died out at the end of the nineteenth century.

It's quite an interesting family - but that's another story...

Regards
JL

jcsm,

Yes, that's 'my' Henry Thomas Cassini'. He was born 19.12.1810 and died 18.04.1877, having married Isabella Elizabeth Lodge on 29.03.1834.

I have records for all the family down from him to me. It's the ones from his father backwards in Italy I have the problem with.

With kind regards
jl

Hi John,

Have you checked church records? Do you have Joseph's death record? His children birth records? Could he have had a will/probate records? Hoping one of these may state town in Italy.

jcsm,

Yes, I have seen all the records I can find on him, but there is no record of where he was born. There is also no will though I have that of his grandson, the first, apparently, to leave one.

JL
