Giovanni Rocchi - Ronciglione Italy

Postby JMFL » 03 Aug 2006, 01:02

Hi
In addition to my paternal side (Mandica-Sottilaro in Italy Mandico-Sattilaro in US). I am also researching my maternal side. I have some info on my maternal grandmother but very little on my maternal grandfather. Here is pretty much what I know:

Grandmother: Anna Pelliccia born Ronciglione Italy July 26, 1884 Her father was Pietro and her mother was Beatrice. We're pretty sure she was married in Italy on Jan. 30, 1909 although my aunt, her eldest daugher, has that they were unmarried for her birth in Oct. 17, 1909. I can find my granmother and two aunts ellis island record. I haven't found any census date for them. They lived in Tottenville, Staten Island, Richmond County, NY. She died Sept 5th or 15th 1939 - still awaiting death cert from NYC

Her husband, Giovanni, came over to US on SS Napoli and arrived in Boston MA on Sept 2, 1913. I haven't been able to see a ship manifest of that. He was naturalized on Jan 28, 1938. He was born in Ronciglione on February 16, 1882 and died on April 27, 1960. Somewhere after he was naturalized he changed the last name from Rocchi to Roccki to people would pronounce it correctly. One of my cousins has his actual nat. cert. and sent me a photocopy of it. This same cousin thinks the name change was done legally, the others don't. How would I find out if it was done legally? If it was done legally, it would have been most likely done some place on Tottenville, Richmond Court, if that would have been possible.
Any suggestions or info you can help me dig up is really appreciated. I emailed and sent a poorly translated letter to Ronciglione about 6 weeks ago asking for my grand parents birth, citizenship and marriage certificates. I didn't know about IRC or I would have sent it along. I haven't heard a word from them about it.

Send a follow up letter and include the IRC.....also, it is better to use a standard form letter which can be found at the following links:

yes,
the dates are off a little, for example Eleanor and Valentino are actually twins, but that is the family. I'm pretty sure my grandfather was never a fireman but that could still be him with an error in employment. He did work at a school in Richmond, but he was the janitor.

Wldspirit,

Thanks for the links to the forms. I will re-send them using the forms and this time I'll include the IRC. In addition to sending forms to Ronciglione, my maternal side of the family, I will now also send to my paternal side, since you have all helped me to find information on them. I'm not sure though what spelling to use on the last names. For my p-grandfather, how do I know if his last name in italy was Mandico or Mandica? For my p-grandmother, how do I know if it is Sottilaro or Sattilaro or some other variation? Is there some way I could look up their names in Italy? I do know my great grandparents names from photocopies of their American Death Certificates, but those names and spellings are what my Dad told them and may not be the names used in Italy.

Also, I went to comuni.it to look up the address for vital records and it didn't even show the town of Cannitello in (RC) Calabria. And, while I was able to get the website of San Lorenzo in (RC) Calabria I wasn't able to find the address to send for birth and marriage records. Do you have another link or info as to how I can find out where to mail the requests to?

Thanks for all your help.

Hi Jan,

Cannitello is a hamlet of the town, Villa Sangiovanni, in the province of Reggio Calabria.

Here is the address.

Ufficio dello Stato Civile
Comune di Villa San Giovanni
89018 VILLA SAN GIOVANNI (RC)
ITALY

Their website.

http://www.comune.villasangiovanni.rc.i ... ?page=home

The LDS Church (Mormans) have filmed the civil records (birth, marriage, & death acts) for this town from 1809-1910.

Here is a link to the available films.
http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library ... o+civile++

Here is a link to locate your nearest LDS-Family History Center.
http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library ... et_fhc.asp

And, a link to a guide on obtaining these films.

Hope this helps.

My opinion.....as Nuccia said, there is no listing for SATTILARO.

However, SOTTILARO is concentrated in the same region of Calabria as is MANDICA...........Mandico is native to Piemonte and Campania.

To see the distribution for yourself, enter surname in cognome, and click on the red arrow......

It seems that Sottilaro and Mandica are the spellings I would use for correspondece with Italy since they are both in the same area of Italy. It is strange that my dad's name was Mandica and his family changed it to Mandico. I may well never know the reason why. I looked up the information for both of their hometowns and I'll be off to the Family History Center next Tuesday to see what records I may find. Very exciting! It appears that LDS hasn't gotten to my maternal side's town of Ronciglione, (the Rocchi family). Fortunately, I have some information on that part of the family and I am hoping to get more info on them soon.

I'll let you know what I discover. Thanks for the links and opinions on names to use. It has been so helpful for me.
