Can't find grandparents in 1930 US Federal Census

Postby john_dominic » 24 Aug 2006, 21:45

Ok, I have traced my family back to the proper cities, etc, etc - but this has been driving me crazy, especially since my grandmother is still alive and i'd like to show her census record to her.

Basically, I have these families in 1930 being alive. Maybe you guys have better search methods than me, so you can come up with something:

Family 1:

Venera Laudani (mother), born 15 Feb 1907 in Lawrence, MA - probably divorced by then, husband was Vincenzo Peri, born 05 Jan 1902 in Caccamo, Sicily, Italy. Venera generally went by "Veronica" and Vincenzo generally went by "Charles Vincent".

Both should be living in Cook County, Chicago, IL, although as I said, I think they were divorced by then. She would have a daughter with her, Mary Peri (my grandmother) who was born in 1926.

Now, there also is an off-chance (slim to none) that she would have been already re-married and living in Chicago Heights, IL to a Giorgio (George) Rotolo, who was born in 26 Nov 1887 and living in Chicago Heights at the time.

Family 2:

Pietro DiMaggio (father), born 16 Jul 1883 in Santa Cristina Gela, Sicily, Italy - went by name "Pete"
Nicasia Fusci (mother), born 07 Mar 1894 in Caccamo, Sicily, Italy - went by name "Cecelia".

Children:

Peter DiMaggio, born 1918 in Chicago Heights, IL
Maddalena DiMaggio, born 1920 in Chicago Heights, IL - went by name "Lana"
John DiMaggio, born 1922 in Chicago Heights, IL
Frank Robert DiMaggio, born 1925 in Chicago Heights, IL.

The entire family should be living in Chicago Heights, IL at the time.

Family 3:

Concetta Zappala, born 1887 in Pedara, Sicily, Italy
Seperated from prior husband Carmelo Laudani so she may be listed with his surname.

Living in Chicago, IL.

Like i've said, I can't find ANY of them in the census, so any help would be appreciated.

P.S. Cecelia and Frank DiMaggio (my grandfather and great-grandmother) are the two standing in my aviator)

Damn, you are good!

That's two out of three and matching the data perfectly, thanks!

Did you try the third (the Concetta Laudani / Zappala)?

Hi John,
No luck w/Concetta (yet).
I'm re-reading your post from last October.
Haven't gotten to the end, did you find her in a 1920 census??

Oh, she was found in the 1920 census with her two daughters, on their own in Chinatown, Chicago - so she was definitely there.

And, i'm pretty sure she was alive, since my grandmother said she died when she was six (which would have been 1932).

According to my grandma, Chicago, when she was six years old.

Also, she was living with some man at the time who wasn't her husband, if that helps.

Ok, that's close, but she didn't have any other kids, so I can't get an explanation on how this would work.

No, No, John!

I wasn't saying that this census record was for your Concetta....Only that it could be for the person on the death index provided by Lisa & as Lisa stated, that is also only a possible.

Please remember that we can provide possible & probable records, but you have to verify all documentation for your family.

Sorry for the confusion.....Hope this clarifies.

Ok, you tell me how to prove it's her, considering I don't know where she was buried or what church she went to.

Some of these things have to be left as a "most possible" option, unfortunately.

Doing it the "most possible" way, you really can't continue researching.... All data afterwards would then be in question!

Did you ever get her marriage record from MA?......Do you have anything that shows her parents' names, her date of birth? Is there anyone you can talk to to obtain information on Concetta's death & burial. Your grandmother? People who raised your grandmorther? How about your great, grandfather's children from his 2nd marriage? Anyone?

You also know about when she died. Try for an obituary.

As for church records, you have her on the 1920 (?) If you do, there should be a street address......using a map site (ex: mapquest.com) you can locate nearest Catholic Churches & start contacting. It's a long shot, but can be rewarding. I would also contact the churches in Lawerence, MA for information.

You really need US records for Concetta, (stating parents, year of birth, town of birth) before you can verify any Italian records & do further research on her family......Did you obtain Veronica's (Venera's)birth record?

Hopefully, other members will provide some other suggestions.

Hope this is clear & helps.
