ITALIAN SURNAME

Postby JoannL » 28 Aug 2006, 17:23

Can anyone please help?? I am looking for my "Malone" ancestors from Corleone.
Does anyone know if there is an "Italian" spelling of Malone?
I cannot find them anywhere on passenger list.
I did find them in Alton, Illinois on the 1920 Census and 1930 Census and the last name was spelled "Malone". But I cannot seem to find them anywhere else.

My grandmother: Concetta "Mary" Malone.
Her Father: Joe Malone
Brother: Luke Malone

I would appreciate any suggestions.

Thanks!

What specific informattion do you have on each of these individuals?

Do you have birth information or Concetta's maiden name?

This is difficult. Could be Maloni, Malono, Molinari, or any of a lot of variations.

Bear in mind also, that all the children born after Luke were born in the state of Louisiana. Particularly since they are Sicilian, very likely they landed at the Port of New Orleans...not Ellis Island.

Stated they landed in 1900...may have to go to the NARA or the Family History Library (FHL) and search for passenger arrivals to New Orleans...should be on microfilm. Go to www.familysearch.org to find the numberbs for the microfilms. If they became citizens, might be able to track that info back as well.........

Good Luck.

Am keeping an eye out... Seems like an uncommon surname for Corleone

I can't tell you if this person is related to your ancestor...

There are other Maria Milone's on record... best to provide more info as suggested earlier on and include birthdates, certainly would save us time.

Maria :P

Essgee offers really good advice, especially about the Louisiana records and port.

If this is your family and the census record you've already located, I can link it here...

It seems to match the manifest I posted earlier... only problem is the age difference between Luke and Mary does not match... and father's name is Ben (Bernardo) not Joe... and more mis-matched info...

Maria....

There are two enteries for a Luke Malone in Alton...One son of Joe, one son of Ben...in fact, Ben and Joe might be related. If you search for "Joe" rather then Luke, you will find it. Don't believe Luke is indexed in Joe's family, but definately on the census page.

You are right Essgee... there are 2 entries for Luke but the only problem is that Maria is not mentioned on this Census... maybe married by then...

Yes Essgee, it does look like these 2 families could be related (Bernardo - Ben & Giuseppe Milone - Joe maybe brothers?) since Luke's name seems to be common..

Here's the census record text info...

Hey everyone!! Thanks for ALL your help...I think ALL of you are right about the Melones.

This is the info that I have, most are from Death Certificates on the Malone/Melone family:

Mary (Maria) Malone/Melone married my grandfather Jasper (Gaspare) St. George (Sangiorgi), but I DO NOT have dates or location....still searching that. ANY IDEAS?
There children: Carlo St. George born approx. 1914
Joe St. George born 1916
Pete St. George (my father) born 1918
Rose or Mary Rose St. George born approx 1920 or 1921.
Luke St. George born 1922, died Aug. 1924 approx 2 years old.

All lived in Alton, Illinois in the 1920's and 1930's. BUT I CANNOT find my dad (Pete St. George) birth certificate anywhere. I have checked with St. Marys church ...nothing there.

Mary St. George Malones parents were: Joe Malone and Luchine Tambarello (but not sure of her last name...hard to make it out on death cert)
Joe and Luchines Children: Mary (Concetta Mary) born 1895, and died June, 1924.
Luke Malone died 1938
Savine Malone
Frances Malone
Josephine Malone
Vincent or Charles(i heard both names..same people)
Luke Malone (Marys brother) was married to a Rose ???? dont know last name....living in Alton, Illinois.
Joe Malone and family also living in Alton, according to census 1920/1930.
Mary Malone St. George Living with Jasper St. George in 1920....Jasper can also be found in 1930.
Luchine Malone (Marys Mother) died 1927 in Alton.
Joe Malone (Mary's Father) died 1941 in Alton.
Everyone buried in St. Joseph Cemetary except BABY LUKE...buried in Oakwood Cemetary.

I think the Maria Melone Pirrone in the 1906 Passenger list is correct, ...BUT can anyone tell me if she was married to the Pirrone name above hers on the manifest?.....ALSO...says they were coming to meet brother in law...?????...if i am reading this right....last name LEONE????...can anyone confirm this?...also...can anyone make out his first name???.....this is correct because Mary's sister Savine was married to a LEONE....this is known for a fact.
Also...it says NEW YORK???....can anyone confirm that...or where in NEW YORK???

ALSO....can anyone make out if Mary Melone Pirrone had any children in 1906 if she was married to this Pirrone person????
I know this is so much, but I am SO excited that you all found my grandmother on a passenger list.

As for as the BEN Malone...that is correct...according to Joe Malones obit...he has a brother Ben Malone in Alton Illinois. So that is why all the Lukes and Marys.

Also...just a little note****according to the 1930 Census..my father Pete, his brother Joe, and sister Rose were in the Roman Catholic Orphange...AND I have the records coming to me anyday now...it took me a year...but I found the Orphanage and have contacted them...they do have my fathers records!!!!!!!

I want to THANK each and EVERYONE of you who responded to my post!!!!
PLEASE if you find anything else on these Melones...yippie...now I know correct spelling....please let me know!!!
LETS KEEP SEARCHING!!! THANK YOU ALL!!!

Hello,

Nice to hear back... :P for starters... going through your notes bit by bit...

Mary St. George Malones parents were: Joe Malone and Luchine Tambarello (but not sure of her last name...hard to make it out on death cert)

There are many people with the name T a m b u r e l l o from Corleone...

Luchine? hmmm not familiar with this given name.. would it be something like Lucia?

Am currently reviewing the first manifest I posted and will give you a recap of what is on there...

Recap of Fsco. Paolo and Maria's manifest...

Melone Pirrone One page manifest

Francesco Paolo ???? Surname is a tough one to read when you first look at this manifest... I could in NO WAY read this as Pirrone... at first sight.... but if you take a look at line 22... there is another Pirrone who's script is a little more clearer...

This is how it was on the Ellis data base...

First Name: Fco. Paolo
Last Name: Pirrone
Ethnicity: Italian, South Italy
Last Place of Residence: Corleone
Date of Arrival: Mar 07, 1906
Age at Arrival: 26y Gender: M Marital Status: M
Ship of Travel: Citta di Napoli
Port of Departure: Palermo
Manifest Line Number: 0027

Listed as a countryman, off to NY with $80, was also in the USA from 1895? to 1904... brother in law is Pietro Leone at 337 & 106 St... hope I got the address right.

Here is a manifest for Pietro Leone.... who's father is Giovachino (sp?) at 337 and 106 St. and he is definitely connected to Maria and Fsco. Paolo...

Pietro Leone's manifest 1905

The bonus about this manifest is that there is a notation that tells me that he also travels with his wife on the same boat??? (43.1.2.) Hope I've understood this correctly.. Wonder who Pietro's wife is.. am currently looking for her.

this is correct because Mary's sister Savine was married to a LEONE....this is known for a fact.

ok... your quote above does make sense now... this info helps me with my next search...

----------------------------------------------

First Name: Maria
Last Name: Melone Pirrone
Ethnicity: Italian, South Italy
Last Place of Residence: Corleone
Date of Arrival: Mar 07, 1906
Age at Arrival: 19y Gender: F Marital Status: M
Ship of Travel: Citta di Napoli
Port of Departure: Palermo
Manifest Line Number: 0028

She is definitely traveling with Fsco. Paolo Pirrone. She is listed as a married.. not sure what her calling or occupation is (does it say married wife)???

She is one her way to NY with $27, and would be joining her brother-in-law Pietro Leone at 337 & 106 St...

--------------------------------------------------

Maria

What makes this confusing is that all these surnames ryhme.. Melone, Pirrone, Leone... well almost... :?

Maria,
Luchine is what it says on death, so I am not positive...and also says Luchine on Obit.
Could be LuchENA??? Also says her father is: Charles Tombarello...so the spelling is differnt on hers then on Mary (Maria) Melone St.George's...says Lonna...OR Louna?...or...Loana? Tambral....so who knows.
What do you think?...kinda hard to tell!!
I am still so new at this, I am racking my brains!!! LOL

Sent you a private message.

Could it be Lucrezia ? Lorenza ? Luigia (Luigina ) ?

Also...just a little note****according to the 1930 Census..my father Pete, his brother Joe, and sister Rose were in the Roman Catholic Orphange...AND I have the records coming to me anyday now...it took me a year...but I found the Orphanage and have contacted them...they do have my fathers records!!!!!!!

Now I can really see why this means so much to you... this must be a very exciting time for you... you must be watching that mailbox closely too eh?? I think it's great that you were able to find the Orphanage.. and more happy that you contacted them...

Once you get started with this... you can't stop...

Hate to burst the bubble, but the Maria Milone Pirrone is the wife of Francesco, the man she is traveling with. Her age is way off. And according to the 1920 census, Concetta arrived in the US ion 1900...which is the date for the rest of the family. I tend to believe that you will need the New Orleans Records....

Now, if someone can locate this family in 1910 census, it would help a great deal... Might explain some things. I have tried all the children, the ages, etc for both Louisiana, Illinois, and for some, the whole US with not help.

Definately looking at the name Tamburello...Maria is correct. It is a name from Corleone. Many went into New Orleans and the Louisiana records of arrivals from 1905 to 1910 support this. However, they came too early to be in this index, so you need films for 1900 arrivals.

Also, I bet the civil records for Corleone are available at the Family History library: www.familysearch.org Search by place and see what is avialable.

Betting on a form of the name Lucia.........don't know why, just a guess.
