Good Morning and Welcome!

While quickly looking through the ellis island records, I noticed your surname seems to originate primarily from the Sicily area of Italy.

Of course, one of our Italian members can help confirm this. Or perhaps James may be able to offer his opinion since he has done extensive research on his family in Sicily and may have come across your surname.

Hope this helps a bit.

Happy Holidays! :D

You may find this useful - but a search does require further work. Actual explanations of names are NOT provided here....
Cannariti IS listed though. Site is in English and Italian!

Hope it may be useful.

Dear Reverend,

Maybe totally off the mark here but I've come across the 'sopra nome' (nickname) of Cannario on two occasions.

For one person it was given to him becasuse he originally came from the Canary Islands (part of Spain); and the second person it was given because they were always singing 'like a canary.'

Your surname may well derive from the 'sopra nome' which over the years have become peoples surname through either their vocation or perhaps where they came from.

Good luck in your search.

I've been through thousands of records at James' site and have not seen Cannariato. However, there is the name SCANNARIATO in Carini. Is it possible/plausible that the name has changed down the year/generations?
