Tracing my family roots

Postby kiddle5 » 27 Dec 2006, 16:58

Hi everyone,

I'm not sure where to begin....I am trying to research my mother's father's family name: Guidoboni. I have access to Ancestry.com, but i have only been able to obtain a limited amount of info.
is there a way to search Italian records and archives for additional info?
I should add that my mom's grandparents names are Louis and Jennie and they settled in Somerville, MA with their 8 children.

Thanks.

There are very few transcribed Italian records online, research is done by microfilm at the Lds or by corresponding to the town of origin in Italy.

If you do not know the exact town of origin, you may be able to discover the town on a ship manifest, or listed on other US documentation.

Wldspirit,

Yes that's them...with a few misspellings. Sorry, there were 9 children. My grandfather is Guido. I believe that's him listed between Frank and Nora. My mothers' uncle Silvio is not listed there. Not born yet maybe.
I have been unable to find them on a ship's manifest, but the census has them emmigrating in 1902. I know they came from a town in Northern Italy very close to the Swiss border. My great-grandmother was a very beautiful blonde. No one can seem to remember her maiden name.
Thanks!

Thank you!
I can tell this is a very helpful group!
How do I go about getting the naturalization docs? Email? Written request? Do I need proof that I am a decendant? What are the approximate costs? Is there a place I can visit to copy them myself? Sorry so many questions...this is very important to me and I really want to accomplish something. I don't believe anyone else has done any in-depth research on the family.

As of 1920 the census tells us that he had not naturalized as yet, and he may never have..that is a possibility...but if he did, as well as the wife and son,it is worth checking out. My Nonni did not naturalize until 1942, she had arrived to this country in 1908.....so you never know.
Here is a link to send for a request:

http://www.uscis.gov/portal/site/uscis/ ... f3d6a1RCRD

If you are in the area of which they lived, you can visit the local federal courthouse to obtain this info. My federal courthouse provided me with everything I needed to send to the repository for the records. It is helpful to have the certificate numbers and dates......or you can use the form above.

I would also recommend gathering as many US documents as possible, birth, death and marriage. Obituaries are a great source for clues, and the local parish may have documentation that would be helpful.

You may have to provide identification, depends on the person taking the request.

There is this listing for a Silvio:

Social Security Death Index
about Silvio Guidoboni
Name: Silvio Guidoboni
SSN:
Last Residence: 02143 Somerville, Middlesex, Massachusetts, United States of America
Born: 23 Dec 1906
Died: May 1974
State (Year) SSN issued: Massachusetts (Before 1951 )

To check for dates of birth and death on the family, you can use the Social Security Death Index, you can access this thru Ancestry as well as Rootsweb.com

Note:

If relatives or the funeral home did not report the death to the Social Security Administration, or if the individual died before 1962 (when the records were computerized) then they probably will not appear in this database. The omission of an individual in this index does not indicate the person is still living. It simply means that there was no report of the person's death to Social Security Administration.

Nice work Vj.......I believe our poster is right, the family was from Northern Italy........using the surname distribution map, the greatest concentration shows in Emilia Romagna.

To see for yourself, enter the surname in cognome, click on the red arrow, and this will bring up a map with your surname distribution in Italy.

OMG Thank you! I just got off the phone with my Mom and she is so happy that you were able to refresh her memory! All this is actually fairly new info to me so I am just ecstatic!
She did tell me that there were 10 children born to Louis (Guido Luigi) and Jennie (My Mom thinks her name may have been Eugenia). The Daniel listed above died from TB as a small child.
You people are awsome!
Oh, I just read everything again and you found her listed as Eugenia.
