Giamo Surname....

Postby pacjr » 28 Dec 2006, 07:42

 I am working on a family tree for my boyfriend. I started with his paternal grandmother (living) and could only find her in the 1930 census (NY). She was born abt. 1915 and has other siblings as well. The census says she and most of the others were born here in NY yet I cannot find an earlier census. My reason for the strong interest is that the head of the house is listed as Rose's mother and that she is widowed. I do not know how else to find out the father's name. I know he is from Italy as well as his wife, Mary. It says that Mary and her eldest child, Charles came here in 1900 yet I cannot find anything from Ellis Island either. Not that that is ever the easiest site to use. I was hoping to not only find them but maybe the husband/father of the children. I know he came here because all the other children were born here.
The only living child of Mary is Rose and she is currently in a nursing home with dementia which is not helpful.

Thanks :D

I found both of those and neither are correct.

1930 Census
Mary Giamo Head age 52 Widowed Born in Italy Migrated 1900
Charles Giamo Son age 33 Born in Italy Migrated with mother
Anna Giamo Daugh. age 21 Born NY
Samuel Giamo Son age 19 Born NY
Joseph Giamo Son age 17 Born NY
Rose Giamo Daugh. age 15 Born NY
Clara Giamo Daugh. age 11 Born NY

See my dilemna?

I am to assume this is correct. I was told that Rose had a brother named Samuel and a sister Annette (Anna?)

No I haven't. I have thought about asking the nurses at the nursing home if they have any information on file. I have only just started researching this tree two days ago and have gone non stop. If nothing else I can always send away for her birth certificate if she was in fact born in NY.

It is best to start with vital records, birth, baptism, and marriage application, if she was married at any point in time. Obituaries are also wonderful sources for clues.......if you can determine when the mother of Rose died, the death certificate, cemetery and the obituary can lead you to more research.

I've worked with both dementia and alzheimer patients, they still have lucid moments, good days and bad.....unless she is so far gone, she is nearing the end. Try spending some time with her and talk to her if you can.....she may surprise you.

We have people here who are wonderful at pulling up ship manifest.....maybe they can locate the trip of the son and mother......any clue as to what the mothers maiden name was??

As of this posting I am clueless to a maiden name. I know that occasionally women traveled by their maiden name.

Thank you

Italian women keep their surname, once in America they adopt the custom of using the husbands surname.....so she will be more than likely listed using the maiden name.

I notice there is almost a ten year gap between son Charles, born in 1898, according to draft registration, and the daughter Anna, born about 1909,
this leads me to believe there were other children, or a seperation of almost 10 years between husband and wife.

Clara died January 16, 1973.....married to a Lacagno. Send for her vitals as well.............hopefully one of our other posters can lead you in the direction of a manifest........

I checked all the sites until 5 am this morning and I wasn't able to come up with a manifest for anyone. Do you know the town of birth in Italy? We could always check by town and hope something comes up.

As for assuming the 1930 census is correct..don't assume anything until you get the documentation. Definitely write away for the vitals (although you may have to get your boyfriend to do it since its his family).

Maybe the name was shortened/changed???

I am going to check into this further and talk this over with my boyfriend. He will be home tomorrow. All these names match what I have. The other posts with additional names are subject to review, anything can happen between census.
Thanks so much. I spent hours upon hours searching and want to send all you my appreciation for the work you've done. This helps so much. I will return if I learn anything new. Hope to be of help to someone someday in someway.
