Italiano Surname in Palazzo Adriana, Sicily

Postby B_Italiano » 28 Dec 2006, 18:48

Hi.
I'm new to the boards & genealogy research, so please forgive me if I sound ignorant.
I'm attempting to research my family history & so far I've been able to (sort of) trace their arrival in the U.S. but I can't find them prior to that.
My great-great grandfather - FRANCESCO ITALIANO came to New Orleans in 1894 (according to his WWI registration draft card) from Palazzo Adriana, Sicily. According to my dad, he came here with his brother, Antonino. (I can't find them on the ship manifests, so I'm going by what he put down on the draft registration card.)
I can't seem to locate him any further back than that.
Also - according to my dad - they traveled to Tunisia before coming to New Orleans, so I don't know if that could be why I can't locate him on the ship manifests.
Any help or direction anyone could give me would be GREATLY appreciated.
Thank you!

P.S. OH MY GOODNESS! I AM SO SORRY THIS CAME UP 5 TIMES, MY COMPUTER SUCKS!

WWI draft card only shows Plazzo, Italy, not Palazzo Adriana. Do you have a document that shows town of origin as Palazzo Adriana?

Other possibilities?

Palazzo Adriano (province: Palermo - region: Sicilia)
Palazzo Canavese (province: Torino - region: Piemonte)
Palazzo Pignano (province: Cremona - region: Lombardia)
Palazzo San Gervasio (province: Potenza - region: Basilicata)

Thanks for the help. BTW- It won't allow me to delete the other posts. Ugh. Sorry.

Frank Italiano had a son named Frank Italiano who married Elizabeth Patton.
Francesco Italiano Sr came here from Palazzo Adriana (I just called my dad, he said it must've been a mistake on the part of the person filling out the card for his grandfather.) Frank Italiano, Sr married Elizabeth MACALUSO who (I'm pretty sure) also came over from Sicily, but I don't know when or where they were married.
(With all the Franks and Elizabeths, it can make me dizzy.)
Frank Italiano, Jr later divorced Elizabeth Patton and married Josephine (My dad thinks her maiden name may have been Orlando).

Thank you so much for your help - you have no idea how much I (and my family) appreciates it.

Yes, those records are for Frank JR.
Frank SR and his wife - Elizabeth Macaluso came to New Orleans with their children - Frank JR (who later married & divorced Elizabeth Patton), & Antonino (Tony - he married Henrietta - "Yetta"). And if the dates I found are correct - Elizabeth Macaluso gave birth in N.O. to their daughter Victoria.
On the 1920 Census for Frank JR- it should state his son's name as Robert, not Roland. (Just incase that little bit of info helps in some way.)

THANK YOU so much for your help (especially with the dups- ugh.)

Thanks for the update.
Every record may hold a clue to the next!
We may have enough to find a manifest.

Hi,

You can trace the family in Palazzo Adriana by ordering/renting the LDS films of the original birth, marriage & death acts.

Here are the available films (covers 1820-1902)

http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library ... o+civile++

A guide to obtaining these films.

http://italiangenealogy.tardio.com/Foru ... =2581.html

To locate your nearest LDS-Family History Center.

http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library ... et_fhc.asp

Your Family History Center will also have an Italian-English genealogical list for sale (small fee) that will help with the translations.

If you prefer to write to the town for the records, please let us know & we can provide that information.

Hope this helps.

Wow, I am floored that you found that manifest.
Thank you soooooo much.
I have no idea who Giuseppina is....
AND you also mentioned an ANTONIO born in New Orleans that I am clueless about, too. "Uncle Tony" was Antonino who was born in Sicily.
My dad is clueless as well and he's calling his aunt Elizabeth (the only living relative) to ask about these people.
THANK YOU SO MUCH for helping me find my history.

Thanks Valarie,
There's a Family History Center near here, but I'm not sure if it's up and running since lovely Hurricane Katrina plowed through here. The area that the center is located in had a great deal of flooding. It would've been open today, but closed at 12p. I'm going to try calling to see if it's back up again.
Giuseppina, apparently was another daughter of Frank & Elizabeth Macaluso.
And the Antonio born in New Orleans is actually Vincenzo who changed his name from Italiano to Vincent Rivard because he "couldn't find work as an Italian." I'm sure his father was proud. BLAH.
(I'd love to know what his career occupation ended up being.)
THANKS AGAIN for all the help. I know you don't realize it, but you're giving a gift that you couldn't possibly put a price on. I hope something really awesome happens for you, because you've made something really awesome happen for me. I have a starting point & more family than I even realized.
