Cognome Salvatore, from Abruzzi, in MA

Postby Graf » 05 Jan 2007, 03:20

My grandfather Michael (Michele?) Salvatore, born around 1890 in Abruzzi, lived in Chelsea, MA until he died around 1960. No one (not even my mother!), knows from what part of Abruzzi he came from. Now I travel to Italy often (my wife is native Italian), and want to trace my roots there a bit. You all seem very knowledgeable and friendly -- how do I go about tackling this?
Other info:
He married Carmela Ardolino, originally from the Avellino area (another search brewing...).
Thanks for any help!

hi vj,
wow, that is interesting! my mother tells us that my great-grandfather, carmela's father, left his family and remarried in the US (and then sent for my grandmother to help his new US wife with their kids!).
i will ask if she knows his name, but it sounds like palmerino is indeed my great grandfather!
thanks,
mike

Thanks again, I love reading the posts here!

Two last comments:
1. I showed my wife the draft card for Michele Salvatore. She is certain that the city is Campolieto, provincia di Campobasso, in Molise. I was thrown off because my mother always said my grandfather was from Abruzzi -- but of course Molise wasn't an autonomous region until 1962 (roughly).

2. As for my great-grandfather Palmerino from Montemiletto, my wife was intrigued by the name of his brother in Boston, Libero (from the ship's manifest). During this historical period, this was a "politically-charged" name, often given by anarchists to their children. I wonder where the name "Palmerino" came from, it is also unusual.
Thanks!
Mike
