Do I qualify?

Postby Aurelius » 17 Jan 2007, 23:11

I asked this question at the ICGS website and was told to post my question here for a more concrete answer. I want to know if my mother who was born in 1930 would qualify for italian citizenship. Her grandparents from both her father and mother's side are from Italy. ICGS told me she would have to qualify through her father's side since she was born in 1930. Is this true? Also I don't believe her grandparents ever became naturalized.
Thank in advance

Post this question in the Emigration, Immigration, Naturalization and Italian citizenship board on the home page. You will get a better response but so far it does sound promising that she qualifies. There are other more qualified members though that can answer your questions better.

When you repost this question in the "Emigration, Immigration, Naturalization and Italian" forum, provide as much information on her parents & grandparents as you can. We maybe able to determine if her grandparnets' naturalized or not.

Before 1948, a child could not obtain Italian citizenship through his/her mother. Since your mother was born in 1930, this rule would apply.

You could qualify this way:

your great grandfather
grandfather
mother
you

This, however, would only work if your great-grandfather never naturalized or if he naturalized before your grandfather was born.

Hope this works for you. If you have any questions about your family's history, you've come to the right place.

I agree with you, Nuccia..........I, too, still get confused on the citizenship stuff. Thank goodness we have "mier" & others that do know it! :D

Hi guys,
Thanks so much, I know I have been jumping from one forum to another but atleast I know you guys are reading my posts. I was going to start a new thread but I may as well continue it here.
Since my mother was born in 1930 I will go through her paternal side. Her father's name was Pedro Bertoldo Panero. He was born in Argentina (hard to believe I don't know the date, think it's 1906.. will research) The town is also in question as I am not sure if it was La Porteña or San Francisco. He was married to Amelia Alberta Armanini in Cordoba Argentina. I will try and see if I can get a copy of their marriage certificate which should have his birthdate and should have his parent's names as well. (Any easy way to obtain this information would be greatly appreciated) I did find Civil Registry's phone number on the web and will try to call tomorrow.
His father, Juvenal Panero came from Torrino Italy. He came with his wife Margarita Troyya. This is how the names of my mom's grandparents appear on her birth certificate.
The rest is sketchy since my mom can't remember or wasn't given too many details. She does believe they mentioned arriving on a ship named Umberto I.
Okay, I don't know if Juvenal Panero was ever naturalized, but doubt it very much. Also, he had two daughters born in Italy that he brought named Catalina and Marietta. He also had another daughter named Dominga born in Argentina.
From this limited information.. where should I start?
