no response from commune?

Postby maddief » 22 Jan 2007, 03:02

What do you recommend I do if I have not had any response from the commune I requested information from? I sent a letter on exactly Nov 6 requesting a copy of my grandfather's birth certificate to the commune in Stilo. I sent it in a bubble package with a self-addressed envelope and a international reply coupon. About two weeks ago, my aunt who speaks some Italian went online and found an email address and she has not had any response to her email either. Any suggestions?

Send a follow up letter before the next step...and there is a third step providing you still have no response from the first two.....

When was your grandfather born? I have some films on permanent loan at the FHC which include Stilo...I think the years I have are 1888 and 1889. If one of those years is close then I may be able to look up a copy for you. No promises..but I can try.

As for writing..I find the Calabrian people fairly relaxed about returning info. Mind you, the holidays didn't help.

I figured the holidays would screw things up and I have heard that Southern Italians aren't the best at being timely. All the same, I just want confirmation that they have received my request and are working on it -- is that so much to ask?!

Although we are unsure of my grandfather's exact day of birth, the family always celebrated it as having been July, 1909. If you could help, that would be fantastic!

One time I sent a letter in September and received a response in 4 weeks. Then I sent a letter to the same comune at the end of November and I did not receive a response until late Feb.... It may be the holidays!!
