Looking for info on Perrozzi possibly from S. Magno Colle

Post by lilperrozzi »

Hi, I just recently found your site, was wondering if anyone here might know how I can go about finding more info on my family. My great grandparents were Rocco and Benedetta(Ferrante) PERROZZI, what records I can find list them as from S. Magno Colle. My mother says that isn't correct but they are from Mouth Casino or somewhere Naples, "there was a Monestary that was bombed in WWII".

They came to the US in 1919 to the Lousiana area, but later moved to Chicago. They had 4 childern Magno, Italia, Peter, and Umberto (my grandfather).

Much thanks in advance for any help.

Yes! That is my great grandparents.

Pesaro would be the ship they came on? and they did arrive in New York not LA as my mom thought?

How do I go about finding more info about them before they arrive in the US?

Thank you so much for what you have given me thus far.

I apologize for all the questions but I am new to this and learning :)

No problem with questions. We're all still learning. Pesaro was the vessel name and they did arrive at Ellis Island. Not sure how they went to New Orleans, most likely by train, but there might have been coastal ship service available. I'll leave the finding records in Italy for another member. I'm just a "wookie" myself.

BTW, the manifest shows that Benedetta was previously in New Orleans from 1905 to 1909. I'll try to find her ship manifest.

Randi & Biff & all,

A little more detail from the manifest:
As Biff pointed out, appears Benedetta may
have been in New Orleans from 1905-1909
perhaps with her sister or her parents?

Randi, your family tree is growing.

Possible 1905 ship manifest for Benedetta and father.

Vessel: Algeria
Arrival NYC: 28 June 1905
Vincenzo Ferrante, age 48, male, married
Benedetta, age 11, daughter
Last residence: Colle San Magno
Destination Boston MA to join Vincente's other daughter Giuseppa at 151 Richmond St, Boston.

Also, on line 13 same manifest Tomasina Coggio, age 3, to join father Rocco in Portsmouth. Last residence Colle S. Magno. There are also other passengers from the same town on this page.

Vincenzo states in US before in Boston from 1891-1904. Bit of an anomaly here with Benedetta's birth year around 1894.

In checking an online map of Italy, Colle San Magno is about 5 miles northwest of Monte Cassino, just southeast of Roccasecca which I'm certain was the birthplace of Rocco Coggio, Benedetta's brother in law, based on ship manifests.

You all have been a great help!

I talked to my mother tonight and my great grandfather Rocco Perrozzi used to heard his sheep near the Abbey in Monte Cassino.

I have hit a block on who his parents were tho and I can not find my great grandmother Maria Benedetta's mothers name.

Thank you for pointing out the Ellis Island site its VERY helpful. Anyplace else you all know of that I might start looking for relatives? I know ancestory.com has some forums.

The 1920 ship manifest states Rocco's father's name was Francesco in Colle San Magno. Not sure about Benedetta's mother's first or last name. First name might be on a census record.

Hi lilperrozzi,

The good news is that the LDS Church (Mormons) have filmed the civil registries for the town of Colle San Magno, but only for 1810 thru 1865.

Here is a link to the available films.>

http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library ... ato+civile++

For records before 1810 & after 1865, you will need to write to the town hall. Here is the address & other contact information.

Ufficio di Stato Civile
Comune di Colle San Magno
Via Lago, 1
03030 COLLE SAN MAGNO (FR)
ITALY
Phone Number: (+39) 0776-560051
Fax: (+39) 0776-560290

All requests should be in Italian & include a self addressed return envelope, a copy of your photo ID & one or two international reply coupons. These can be obtained at your post office & pays for the return postage.

Here is a form letter that will translate your request into Italian.

http://www.circolocalabrese.org/resourc ... civile.asp

Here is an Italian-English genealogical word list that will help with translating the records.

http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/ ... Italia.ASP

I hope this helps. If you have any questions or need anything, at anytime, please don't hesitate to ask. We are all happy to help others with their research.

Happy hunting!

Another suggestion. In checking ship records for Rocco Coggio, I found a couple of ship manifests that showed he, his wife, and children returned to Italy, possibly to visit family. If you can touch base with any of his grandchildren, they might have information to share since the ship manifests might indicate they kept in close touch with folks in Italy. Likewise, I'd canvas anyone else in your family, aunts, uncles, cousins on the Ferrante and Perrozzi side for details.

Any info you find out might help. For instance, did Rocco Perrozzi have any siblings who emigrated? If so, where/when? Besides Benedetta, Maria and Giuseppa, were there any other siblings who emigrated and where/when? Did Benedetta's father Vincenzo have any other siblings who emigrated and where/when? Answers to these questions could lead to locating addition ship manifests which might lead to discovering Benedetta's mother's first name and surname.
