Giuliano - Where do I start???

Postby barbalatte » 15 Feb 2007, 05:16

Guys I've been doing this on and off for a while now but get really frustrated that all the websites around are dedicated to American-Italians.

Well I'm Australian-Italian and am trying to get information on my family name and where it originated.
Where do I start??

The furtherst I can track, is my grand parants and great grand parants.

Grand Father Name: GIULIANO, Gennaro
Born: Italy, Napoli. 1928 approx.

Grand Mother Name: CASTELLANO, Rita
Born: Italy, Napoli. 1930 approx.

Great Grand Father Name: GIULIANO, Federico
Born: Italy, Napoli. 1900 approx.

Great Grand Mother Name: CONSOLAZIO, Teresa
Born: Italy, Napoli. 1900 approx.

I am really looking for help here and I am willing to spend money to find out my true ansestors.

Can anyone help???

Thanks for the information Michael.

I sent an email to the Stato Civile to see if they can help with a birth certificate.

How far back are records kept anyway? Can I just request a Birth Certificate and keep tracking back that way?

Oh, I just order a DNA test. What's the deal with those things?

barbalatte,

I noticed you put "approx" on all your dates. Does this mean you have no actual documentation on these births? Were your ancestors actually from Naples or from a nearby town? Sometimes microfilm is available for some towns from the Family History Center so you can look for birth, marriage and death acts that way but in order to do this you need to have the exact town of birth.

As for ordering birth certificates, I would request birth extracts or better still, death extracts which provide more info and work your way backwards from there.

While I've used email to request info as well, I have found its not as successful as actually writing a letter and using good old fashioned "snail mail". You should include an international reply coupon (available at your Post Office) and some photo ID.

I'm sure others can add their advice to this...

There may not be as many online Australian records available but there are resources which exist..you just need to explore them.

Thanks for the help Nuccia.

Yes, my family were all from Napoli Napoli! Secondigliano to be exact. I'm not to sure if my Great Grand Fater was from Secondigliano but my Grand Father was.
