GRASSI FAMILY and Circus

Postby mysty » 17 Feb 2007, 17:15

Hello members :)

My gggrand father was an African/American, allegedly of Nubian descent o was a lion tamer and worked with numerous circus's.

His name was Joseph LEDGER, and his stage name was ''LEDGER DELMONICO'' He was born in the USA in about 1841 and married Anna Kreutzberg in Norwich UK in 1866.

Joseph was a flamboyant character and very popular with the ladies, according to my late grand mother.
He appeared at the Folies Bergere in Paris with his lions and tigers and travelled extensively in Europe. In the later stages of his life he worked with Wombwells circus, also Ginettes, mainly in the north of England, especially in Bolton and Manchester.

I have discovered that a gent by the name of GRASSI has been making enquiries about DELMONICO, having recently discovered that he is related to him. Obviously I am very keen to talk to him !

Does anyone know of any connection between GRASSI and the circus ?
There may not be a connection with the circus at all, but I do believe there may be ancestors of mine out there who are related in some way to the GRASSI family.

Any help appreciated.

Now that we know he was born in Philadelphia maybe we can try to connect the Grassi name to his family.

Hi Nuccia

Yes, that is my gggrandfather.

In the 1881 census there is a male called Roger Dallimonico listed at 33 Broad St. Stamford, Lincolnshire, born 1851, occupation - lion tamer, place of birth - Arabia.
He has a 'wife' listed with him, Emila Dallimonico, born Middlesex, England c1857.

I'm certain that this is the same man that I'm looking for.

In the Southampton census, Joseph's real wife Anna gives her name as Anna Delmonice, along with her children. [Her married name was Ledger]
Joseph used to spend years away from home and family

I have a copy of his marriage certificate [1866 Norwich UK] so I suppose the next step is check to see if he married bigamously ?! I don't even know if Joseph Ledger was his real name.

I'll be very interested to see whether Emila was connected to a circus family.

So you believe he was leading a double life? DELMONICO them may be his last name...If Roger really is Joseph, then he even lied about his age by 10 years and his place of birth.

Information on Ledger Delmonico on a UK site, The Fairground Heritage Trust. Mysty, if you posted this query, my apologies.

Thanks Nuccia and Biff83

I have the census details and have already posted on the British fairground site. I think Joseph probably didn't want to be found !

He always claimed he was of Nubian [Egypt/Sudan] descent, which was entirely possible. I learnt yesterday from a fairground researcher that Joseph's father in law Gottlieb Kreutzberg [a wild animal dealer] from Germany bought an elephant in 1863 from a Nubian called Lorenzo Casanova. The animal had been captured in Nubia.

Lorenzo Casanova ? Sounds a bit shifty to me...could this be Joseph ? and why this ''Italian'' theme with his names ?

Somebody somewhere must be looking for this man, however he seems to have covered his tracks very well.

Another quick point, on his marriage certificate in 1866 to Anna Kreutzberg, he states his fathers name was ''Dublin'' I think that's another bit of artistic licence.

Thank you for responding to my logs :D

Much appreciated

Mysty

Hello to Mysty

I just stumbled onto this site (don't have any Italian genealogy), but stunned to find that your LEDGER DELMONICO was staying with my great-great grandmother's brother, John B. COOKSLEY (and his wife Elizabeth) in Liverpool in the 1891 Census. From this listing, I've found another COOKSLEY (Cora) who I didn't know about, for my research. Serendipity. You never know what you'll find - or where! :)

I have just read your post.
I am Steph Langley - Joseph Ledger was my great great grandfather.
My grandmother was Maisie Bull, nee Ledger - Nora Maisie on her birth certificate, born 1911. I think the reason someone called 'Grassi' may have been trying to find out about Joseph Ledger is that my great aunty winnie, who was Joseph's grand-daughter, married Mario Grassi and she had two sons called Barry and Geoffrey. It could have been one of these two or their children, who have been trying to find out more??

Hello Steph

Maisie was my grandmother's cousin whom she often talked about. I would love to talk to you.
