Pignatiello/Vannicelli surnames

Starting the search on my italian side... Here is what I have so far...
My g-grandmaw (Donata Pignatiello) came from Lacedonio Avellino Italy, born in 1891(?), came to America in 1909 and was accompanied by Michelina Campanalonga (age 62?). (unsure of this relation, if any) Michelina was going to Columbus, OH to meet her husband listed as Michele Pignatiello whom arrived in 1909 at the age of 44. Michelina listed a relative (sister-in-law) Eugonia Pignatiello back in Lacedonia.
My ggrandmaw, Donata, met and married my ggrandpa Giuseppe Vannicelli, who came to America in 1906 from Cullagna, Italy. I am assuming that they married in the states, but I am not able to find this info. I know they had 13 (?) children, and most everyone lives in Columbus, OH.
I am trying to find any info I can on either my ggrandma Donata or my ggrandpaw Giuseppe (John) Vannicelli.
Any suggestions?

Is John really Giuseppe or Giovanni? Usually Giovanni is translated to John. Is this the family in the 1930 Census?

According to this census, they have been married for about 21 years which puts the year they married at 1909...Now, looking at the manifest for Donata and Michelina, the relationship listed between the two is mother and daughter. Michele was Donata's father.

They were also traveling with two other of Donata's siblings. Looks like Eugenia was more than likely Michele's sister.

Now, this has only been a really quick search..I haven't tried various spellings yet so the first thing I want to recommend is that you get a good genealogy program. You're going to need a way of organizing your info.

Theres a free one available from www.familysearch.org that you can download. There are others such as Family Tree Maker and that are available at a small cost.

Some great sites to get you started..

www.ellisisland.org or www.stevemorse.org.

You will need to register a username and password but they are free and you can view images of the ship manifests your family was listed on. If you notice on the manifest I linked earlier, it even provided some numbers next to Rocco's name and on his sibling which I believe were the year they naturalized in (not sure since I only quickly looked).

www.ancestry.com has alot of great info but you need to pay for a subscription although you can join for 14 days at no cost. Ancestry.com is also available through your local library or family history centre. Call to confirm first, though.

You will want to download some family group sheets and pedigree charts as well..also available through familysearch.org.

Have I left anything out?? I'm sure I have but will post as I think of them.

Will keeping looking if you like or if you prefer to do it yourself just let me know...half the fun is the research.
