Help - Polizzi Family

Postby ajpowell » 14 Mar 2007, 00:52

I finally found my husband's grandmother (thank you 1910 census winsted, CT. HOH Salvo Polizzi, Wife: Maria)

Grandfather: Thomas Santoro(a) - Boarder
Grandmother: Annie Polizza - daughter

I'm now trying to get some history on the Polizzi family, but I am not getting anywhere with ellisisland.com.

Can anyone suggest another source of information, Please?

Hi Ajpowell,

The surname Polizzi has been mis-transcribed as Polirzi, or Poliszi in many cases. There are many manifests for Salvatore Polizzi coming from the town Borgetto.

Here's a possible manifest, though the quality isn't very good and his age is hard to read.

1903 manifest

It looks like he was from Borgetto, going to his brother in law ??? Girolamo, in New York. According to this manifest, possible year of birth is 1869.

First Name: Salvatore
Last Name: Polirzi
Ethnicity: Italy, So. Italian
Last Place of Residence: Borgetto
Date of Arrival: Apr 15, 1903
Age at Arrival: 34y Gender: M Marital Status: M
Ship of Travel: Napolitan Prince
Port of Departure: Palermo
Manifest Line Number: 0017

And another!

First Name: Salvatore (Born 1853)
Last Name: Polizzi
Ethnicity: Italy, Italian (South)
Last Place of Residence: Borgetto, Sicily
Date of Arrival: Jul 22, 1907
Age at Arrival: 54y Gender: M Marital Status: M
Ship of Travel: Algeria (1891)
Port of Departure: Palermo, Sicily
Manifest Line Number: 0029

Trish, checked Anna's (future) husband's manifest from
1907 to see if any Polizzi's were travelling w/him.
No luck. It's under Gaetano Santoro 3 Sep 1907
from Floridia Siracusa (lined off) going to Winsted, CT
but not to the Polizzi's...Valarie :?

Try using this search engine for manifest, the results are better than the Ellis Island site:

Hi everyone,

Apparently, Thomas Santoro made another trip from Italy.

First Name: Tom
Last Name: Santoro

Last Place of Residence: Winsted, Conn.
Date of Arrival: Oct 03, 1924
Age at Arrival: 37y Gender: M Marital Status: M
Ship of Travel: Aquitania
Port of Departure: Cherbourg, France
Manifest Line Number: 0030

http://ellisisland.org/search/shipManif ... 0455010090

The WWI Draft Card proves the manifest and town that Valarie found.

Name: Thomas Goetono Santoro
City: Not Stated
County: Litchfield
State: Connecticut
Birthplace: Italy
Birth Date: 15 Jan 1887
Race: Caucasian (White)
Roll: 1570490

So does the 1942 Draft Card prove the town that Thomas Gaetano Santoro was from.

Residence: Litchfield, Connecticut
Birth: Floridia, Italy
Race: White
Roll: WW2_2283881

Thanks for the tips (especially the manifest from Cherborg...I missed that one)

I found Toms manifest. He (finally) arrived in 1907 from Messina to NY to Winsted Ct on San Giorgio with his friend, Francesco.

I'm puzzled by the Polizzi family. There are many Manifests for the name Salvo Polizzi, however, none suggests that he is accompanied by wife Maria or daughter Anna(ie). Moreover, I cannot find anything for Annie or Maria that "fits" the time frame.

I'm biased in believing (but not 100% sure) that they landed in Winsted CT and not NY, simply be
cause that's the pattern I've seen with other friends/family members.

Any ideas? Are the Ellis Isalnd manifests complete? Perhaps there are missing records?

Once again, thank you....I am in awe of your willingness to help out. I hope that when I get better at this I can repay your kindness by helping out other "newbies."

Allison,
Maria & Anna could have followed Salvo later under
Maria's maiden name (do we know what it was?)
You're right it is hard to zero in on the correct Salvatore.
It's also possible they used the port of Boston or Phila...
Ellis is pretty complete, may have been mis-transcribed tho.
Valarie
