Where do I go from here?

Postby Gina501 » 21 Mar 2007, 15:23

Hello everyone. I have a huge question. I have followed everyone's advice and got all American documents for my ancestors that came to America. Where do I go from here?

Everytime I connect with someone, they have ancestors back to the 1700s and I am still working on the mid-1800s. I am getting very depressed! What are my next steps? I am unsure of what to do now?

Hi Gina,

It wasn't that long ago that you were looking for death records and cemetary locations. How did you get the death certificates so quickly? This is something that others might find helpful.

If you have identified the town of origin in Italy you write for certificates. I recommend first checking and see if the records are available on microfilm through LDS family history center.

I also recommend to start reading. (I borrowed this from Essgee) Trafford Cole's book--Italian Genealogical Records-- and Lynn Nelson's book--Discovering Your Italian Ancestors--can help you understand what the records hold and the information you may wish to access. They are available at many libraries and bookstores.

Thanks Debbie. I bought the book "Discovering Your Italian Ancestors" and should be arriving any day now. Believe it or not, I was able to retrieve all 8 of my great-grandparents death certificated through the City of New York. There is an online form - I filled it out with payment of $12 each and within 10 days I had them all. Hard to believe from those folks! Then I called the three different cemetery's that my 8 great-grandparents were burried in and they gave me plot locations. Again, hard to believe. My parents are going to New York next month and will take pictures of the gravesites while there. Thanks to this site, the Italians have been easier to find info on. But my mother's people are Syrian and I don't even know where to begin for that.

HA, well either way just like you and everyone else in this forum want to learn more. Do you need anyone to do a little leg work in New York? I would be happy to go take a picture or look something for you.

you know....I just might. My parents are going to NY next month for a wedding. They are going to go to some cemeteries for me to take pictures of the graves. If they do not get a chance, I may ask you sometime to go to the one in Queens if you're ever going by there. Are you near Calvary at all?

Oh Wow Mike! That is terrific. If you'll go to Calvary for me, that frees up my parents to go to St. John's and St. Raymond's for me. Thanks so much. There is no rush either. Whenever you go you go. I will give you in a few days the 3 grave sites I need pictures of. Actually I think it's one grave and all 3 are burried in it. I am waiting on the location of one more by mail. The people at Calvary wouldn't help me over the phone so I mailed in my request and am waiting on their response. So I'll let you know in a few days.

I don't see why they wouldn't help you, they filled in some blanks for me over the phone. Ummm if you want give me the death dates for these people and I will call myself it isn't long distance for me. One lady doesn't like to help but the others are pretty good. I would even go to St. Raymonds for you, my grandma's grandparents are there too. Whatever you need let me know.

Thanks Mike. But I can't ask all that of you. We'll start with Calvary and then I'll see if my parents can make it to St. Raymond's. If not, then next time you take a trip there maybe you can take the pictures for me. But I can't ask that of you now. St. Raymond's is all the way in the Bronx.
