Looking for Riccio family info.

Post by eala1015 »

I am looking for information on my maternal grandfather Umberto Riccio, who lived in Sessa Aurunca Caserta. I found the ship manifest on the Ellis Island web site and know he was 21 and single when he arrived here in 1907. He had a brother Giovanni who came here before him and once arriving moved to his home in hartford CT. My grandmother, Filomena Londa was from Caserta and since I found no record of her at Ellis Island, I am assuming that my grandfather went back to Italy and married her, then brought her here. Whether this was a common thing then I don't know.
If anyone knows how I can continue my search from where I am now, any help would really be appreciated.

Possible 1911 ship manifest for Umberto and Filomena, lines 18 and 19, note 2 page manifest

Umberto Riccio, age 24, last residence and place of birth Sessa
Filomena, wife, age 20?, last residence and place of birth Sessa
Destination Bristol CT to join brother Giovanni
Umberto states previously in US
edited to add--can anyone make out the names of Umberto's parents?

http://ellisisland.org/search/shipManif ... 0568%2ETIF

And in one of those amazing coincidences, check lines 25, 26 and 27 for Antonio Mendicino, Angelo Cicco, and Nicola Mendicino going to Scranton to join brother-in-law/uncle Antonio Epifano. Antonio Epifano is my paternal grandfather Giuseppe's brother, husband of Serafina Mendicino. Antonio and Nicola Mendicino are Serafina's brothers and Antonio Mendicino would marry my paternal grandmother Felicia Mancuso's sister, Francesca, in double ring ceremony with Giuseppe and Felicia in 1914 in Carbondale PA. Talk about amazing.

:D Thank you so much for your help. I had an idea that Umberto's father was named Carlo, since Umberto's oldest son was named Carl(o), and I understand the Italian naming tradition, but had no idea what Umberto's mothers name was.
I really appreciate all your help and from my heart, again, thank you.

Debbie, I would like to do both if possible. I do not understand Italian (my grandarents told my mother that in America we speak english, but Italian at home), but if there is a place where I can get info in Italy, that would be great.

Valarie, great job. Maureen should be "più che soddisfatta." Edited to change soddisfatto to soddisfatta (wrong gender ending). Oops.

You are all so wonderful!!!!! Thanks so much for everything. I am in geneology heaven right now and so greatful for your help. I have made more progress in the last few days than the last 10 years since I began this quest. It is because of you great people who are so dedicated to this task. WOW!!!
One last thing, what is the Italian name for James? I have gone insane trying to remember it from my childhood and just cannot.
My grandfather had a half brother (illigit.) James who took his mother's last name of Manafort which angered his Riccio brothers. I know he lived here in CT but can find nothing about him. He married a woman named Lena (no maiden name found) who I remember as a child visiting my grandparents.
The best thing I ever did was to stumble upon this website and hopefully in time I will be able to turn around and help others as you have helped me.
Thanks so much,
Maureen
